Just thought id let everyone know that i killed the engine in my el xr8.... Melted three pistons... Caused by running crappy standard unleaded instead of the good stuff.... And a dodgy air temp sensor.

Now i gotta get my baby rebuilt..

Is there anything else i should get my mechanic to do while he is rebuilding it, that wont bump up the price toooo much...

Thanks Matt

yeh stroker crank n definately notched pistons..

port ya heads, or go new ones(with big valves - thank you notched pistons), cam,.. and stick a better intake manifold on if you dont have the series 2..

high energy sump? stud girdle? if you mod it out, stick a fresh(with tight tolerances) oil pump on.. maybe even a high volume one..

yeah but all thats expensive.

extractors+exhaust, camshaft+valvesprings, mild head port.

and getting a decent tune-up.

at least put decently notched pistons in there.. i mean u'l be up for new pistons anyway... then you can whack some beast heads on later on down the track n not have to pull the motor out of the bay..

hence me sayin sump/oil pump.

cam/heads/intake etc etc can be done in the engine bay.. tho cam is hard to do, ideally change that, and ideally the heads now aswell.. but not strictly nessessary..

since it'l be getting cleaned up anyway, blueprint the block too.. extra few ponies from less lateral friction, less wear, plus u can make a bit more power before it splits..

yeh its all expensive, but i say better spend 500 bucks now to do what it may cost 1500 to do later.. thats if you've got the 500...

If you have to pull everything out, you may as well spend a bit more and get it all done. I don't see the point spending all that money replacing engine parts with stock stuff. When you get the car back after all the work/money, it will only go as fast as it did before it died. At least if you do some work to it, you'll have some more power for all the effort.

Forged 347w stroker kits go for around $2200 new these days, if you need to replace the rods and crank, the stock ones aren't a whole lot cheaper to buy new.

Let that be a lesson young fella dont use crap fuel in your baby. I only use Ultimate 98.
Shame about the temp sensor too.
Now is a good time to do the upgrades while the engine needs it like the other guys said.

Thanks everyone for your replies,
Money is very tight for me at the moment so I have had to get it bored out because or damage to the bores and new pistons put in, they are good ones but not sure if they are notched. I was hopeing the cam would have been worn so i could replace that as well but everything else is micky mouse. I will put on a pic of one of the pistons so everyone can see the damage that can be done by running crap fuel and not fixing little problems like pinging. Someone might like to use it in a doco or something...

Cheers Matt

while then engine is out, talk to mech about:

sticking heads with 2.02" valves on with a cam later on down the track. (he'l either say yeh you can, or no you cant, but at lest you'l know)

stud girdle, only really needed on high hp motors, but heh, get a price on one. if u upgrade top end at lest u know the block is gonna be a wee bit tighter..

new oil pump, for reasons mentioned above. ie new is nice. and they're like 60 bucks.

you can get an AU series 3 220kw engine from macarthur parts plus for $3000 from throttle body to sump complete less AC pump
why bother spending the same or more and getting less power?
all you need to do is put your dizzy in it and maybe a couple of your sensors as the plugs are different
