Hey guys.

I was driving home from work this afternoon in the rain + heat..
The temperature gauge on my elxr8 was showing about 3/5ths of max temperature. It wasnt quite in the redline, but was only about 4mm off it!

I had the aircon going, but still, the temp gauge shouldnt have been that high i dont think. Should i be worrying? And why could this be happening?

used to happen to mine aswell, my radiator was about 30% blocked. new rad, no probs since.

Coolant levels are spot on. Bright green aswell - no brownish s**t!
So its still fresh..

So how did you know that it was blocked?
And also, if it needs replacing, ill replace it with a better one..
Any recommendations + prices?

i only found out when i stuffed my rad recently, when i took it to the rad place they said it was blocked aswell and that was why it was creeping up when on the freeway with the a/c on.

i got a heavy duty rad from superior radiators (natrad) at moorebank, i went for the 2 row heavy duty for $319 inc. brand new, no exchange, they also do a 3 row for the same price. heaps better than the std one, never goes above a 1/4 now, even with a/c on.

Would the heavy duty 2-row be suitable for a modified engine? As i dont want to modify the thermo shroud with a 3 or 4 core.. Unless there is a kit available to suit the extra rows?

There is no kit to suit the extra rows so you need to trim the plastic of the shroud if you wan tto fit the larger one. If you do go withe 2 row, there is a high flow core available (as fitted to the XR series which allows slightly better cooling than the standard 2 row. Depending on how many mods you have, a larger one would be useful, I run a 4 row in mine and it runs very cool even on 40 degree days with AC on.

Instead of modding the shroud, is there any way of actually removing it? Or is it not a good idea. Cos i do have a fair few major plans for the car in the near future..

Not a real good idea. The shroud is there to pull the air through the radiator and stop it cavatating. Id leave mine in place

Hmm how do you get cavitation from a fan pushing air?

Yeah but compared to every other el xr8 that ive seen or been in with a healthy cooling system, it doesnt get anywhere near as hot as mine does! Mines only a couple of mm's off the redline on hot days with a/c on.. I dont think thats normal man, lol.. Better to fix it now then when it gets worse IMO..
