ther have been a few inline 8's over the years, buick had one, forgot who else

basically it all comes down to packaging, a I8 is even longer than an i6, but a v8 is 2/3rds the length, but can still be made to fit into most engine bays

Oldsmobile used to have a straight 8 as well. But then you start having to go into things like two 4 cylinder heads to try and stop distortion etc. Theyre just too big. Fairly sure in thinking Ford never used a straight 8. Now theyre going for even more compact engines, one of the laatest being the W8.

i doubt anyone could answer that question accurately given the time/technology gap between them

Theyre a very smooth motor apparently, and one would think thed make as much power as an 8! * cylinders, still only makes 8 cylinders of power!

Sure are, but they are bloody long!
Went to my grade 10 formal in a buick with an inline eight and the thing was long long long!
The V8's are easier to fit in and that, hence there popularity.

Think the heads on our I6's are too long? These are a joke!

v configured engines are both shorter in height and shorter in length but wider, it makes them easier to fit into cars with sleek bonnet lines without having alot of overhang on the front. I dont think there have been any tests where they got two 6 cylinder engines and made one a V type engine and one an inline, and kept the displacment, bore, stroke, camshaft profiles, engine management, valve angles, valve size, induction tube length and shape ect. all identical so you cannot directly compare power of v and i type engines fairly

That's then be a H8 (or boxer).

I have seen an oldsmobile str8 8 in action. The thing had one carb and when u gave it a bit of poke, litterally a cupfull of fuel would spew out. The main prob I could see was the first few cyls got too much mixture the next few were nice and the last ran lean. But saying that, it was the smoothest sounding engine ive ever heard, very sweet indeed. The thing was huge, really long.

I cant see the str8 8 being anywhere near as efficient as the V8 set up, with twin carbs it might come close but with the added length of the cam and crank and keeping everything balanced, in time and in tune you would still be behind. There must be other reasons awell, otherwise you would still see them about today. As for the sound though, theres nothing like it, not anything like a lumpy V8 but just as cool in its own way.
