Hey, I just fitted an explorer manifold to my EF, and it now runs like a bag of s**t, seems to overfuel heaps, missfires and will barely idle, sits around 650rpm when idling, but it fluctuates heaps, I have no vacuumn leaks that I can see, and the base timing is all correct, I'm running out of ideas where to look next. I am running the injectors and throttle body from the HO manifold. There's no spot for the intake air temp sensor to go, but I wouldnt have thought that'd make it run really crap. Does anyone have a vacuumn diagram for a 5 litre EL? Does the fuel pressure regulator hook up to direct vaccumn? Will it run properley with the standard ECU?

It really sounds like a vacuum problem.
It should run fine with your ECU. The intake sensor can be drilled and tapped into the E-Series spot, or get the intake tube fitment sensor from an AU. A certain model of Explorer had the same one. Could always put your original one into the intake too. Apparently its best to have it in the original spot however. Where do you have the fuel reg vac line coming from? I can't remember how different the vacuum fittings are on the explorer manifold. Are there more or less? From memory there are less, you may need to block off a few holes in the vacuum tree the manifold connects to over the passenger side? None of the vac lines you moved have split or broken? I had the upper off my 5.0 EL the other day and the fuel pressure reg line cracked and split. Lots of the hoses are probably brittle and hard, easy to break or split. Is all of the EGR stuff connected still? The bit next to the throttle body normally has a vac line on it, and there are the lines going to the solenoid under the quarter. One goes from the bottom of the HO manifold. Is it all torqued down tight and sealing? Throttle body and EGR thing sealing well? ISC plugged in and sealed? Have you reconnected all the original vac lines and loom plugs? EGR thing etc. Thats all I can think of. Good luck. |

If you relocate the IAT to the air intake tube, say goodbye to adaptive learning until you get a chip that changes the switch-on temperature to something appropriate for the new location. Adaptive control is the feature that allows the ecu to "learn" about each specific engine and alter it's operation to suit. So if you make changes from the factory set-up (extractors/exhaust, intake, cam etc), and as the engine wears (lower compression as ring and valve leakage increases with wear) and sensors & components drift from new specs, the ecu counter-acts this to keep the engine running nicely. Without adaptive learning the ecu treats the engine like it's a stock brand new 5.0HO, just like when you reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery.
The stock IAT switch-on setting for adaptive learning is 38°C due to charge air heating through the intake. The relocated placement of the IAT sensor needs to reflect that minimum temp. Remember with an explorer there is no EGR intake charge heating effect and usually the coolant feed lines going to the EGR spacer are also deleted FPR references manifold vacuum. Your problem sounds like a vacuum leak or a bad electrical connection. Check with a vacuum gauge. A stockish 5.0 should idle around 18" Hg and be rock solid

Did you refit the earth cable under the manifold bolt in the rear passengers side?

This is all sorted now, ended up being that I needed to fit an AU MAF sensor, possibly fitting another EL one would've been ok, because I cant confirm that mine wasnt just rooted. Also we fitted the AU Intake Air Temperature sensor, and EGR Bypass at the same time, seems to run alot better.
