hi all, any ideas as to why my few month old front main engine seal would start leaking?? it was put in bout 6 months back along with new timing chain case and the car has traveled a grand total of like 5km since then. whats the chance of a new seal lasting only 6 short months without being driven fuk all. not in a real good mood right now cos it was all done by ford in the first place and they fuked heaps of other stuff when they did the job and now i gota take my car back to a bunch of fuks that i dont want within a mile of my car. end rant. anyone know why this would happen?

Seals usually leak if they are not put in properly/carefully.

well thats what i thaught but there is no way you could not put it in properly cos it only goes in one way and it has a flat edge that sits against the timing cover so you could see if it wasnt in right but we are talking bout ford mechanics here- (sory to all the good ford mechanics out there) slowly calming down now, new ceramic coated pacies just arrived so that helps a bit.

if the seal's been "pressed" in on a slight angle and then tap'd straight it will leak.
Other then that, maybe they didn't put in the right sort of seal, I.e mains should be have oil flinger's in side of the main lip. where the normal seals like hub/pinion seals don't always have them.

i always slip the crank pulley into the seal to centralise it in the seal before i tighten the timing cover bolts .....some have dowels ..easy enough to take them out and see how far out they are , then just tighten up or slot the dowel holes
this is good practice with all lip seals in housings....make sure the lips on the seals are lubed
