Well ive got a leak, coming from the sump plug, the thread inside is stripped out.
So my question is, would i be better to tap it out to a slightly larger size, and use a larger plug? Just whack on some sealant on the plug? Use a helicoil? Im thinking prob tap it out to another size, it is currently 1/2", so i was thinking maybe tap it out to 13mm? not sure if they make a plug at that size though. What do ya all think? am i on the right track? just dont wanna go tapping it out, then realise i f**k up big time.

The sump plugs are much softer than the thread inside the sump. Try a new plug first. They are 1/2" UNF. The OE sump plugs had a 7/8" head, and the replacement ones have 3/4" heads.

New plug and seal??
You can buy oversized sump plugs that are especially designed to replace threaded ones. They are larger and tapered and have a New sump plug inside it. I cant find a picture, but I can assure you they're out there. Downside, takes longer to drain as the hole is smaller. Personally I would have a go at re-taping/brazing it if its gone that far.

i had the same problem for 4 years,i used teflon tape on the plug.you can get o\sise plugs, but a waste of time.when i had my k frame out i dropped the sump and had a look.they use a 1mm flat 40x25mm three spot welds and tap both plates.i turned up a plug 27mm dia.stepped to 30mm dia.x12mm long and threaded 1\4bsp,cut out the hole to 27mm drop the plug in,30mm inside the sump and silver solder it in-both sides.the plug hangs out about 5mm.now you have 10-12mm of thread to use, just clean up and paint----i used black engine enamel.

After going to this on my AU i6 i would recommend either helicoil or replace the sump. I ended up replacing the sump as retaping mine still leaxked even with tape thread.

Aren't the AU I6 sump plug holes helicoiled out of the factory? My boss just screwed a spark plug in there and it works a treat. I've got a pic of it as well if you want me to throw it up for the s**t and giggles. |
