Ok guys, my main problem is that I can pretend as much as you want that I know what I'm talking about, but I actually don't.
The links people give me for what to do with my 5ltr confuse the hell out of me.

I don't know where to go, how much to expect to pay, what needs doing or what an 'egr' is.. so saying things like "ok, you need to get these heads with this cam and do this to your EGR and this chip with this fuel pump" is all well and good, but I don't know how to go about it!

I understand that i could easily spend the money and have a bogus combo that would be a complete waste of money

I will have $1200-$2000 (more than likely the lower end) to spend on the EL in the coming weeks and I don't know which way to turn.

I'm getting 4.11's fitted tomorrow, and I was going to spend 1400 on an auto rebuild with a shift kit -
Then someone advised me that shiftkits are pigs that stuff diffs, uni's, etc and are just too harsh for the driveline to handle.
I was also told that my auto shifts fine and all I should get is a Trans Cooler.

So really.. I need pin point detailed instructions on what to do! haha!

What should me next attack be to make her go faster? :D

Heads and Cam? (what combo, to do get it done, how much, what gains?)
Chip, and intake? (where, how much, what gains?)
Any other ideas?

It already has extractors and a really great sounding (and apparently well preforming) exhaust system and a 'gt snorkel'.

Are these engines generally slugs? Are they restricted alot in a certain area?

Mine goes like poo.. I won't spin off the line, has barely any torque, and gets beaten by corolla's and pulsars.

How can I liven her up?

I could save for a few months and spend more on it, but i'm really looking to get some go-fast bits done to it now so I can change her reputation of being a slug of a boat.

Pretend you're speaking to someone who barely reads english and doesn't know what a car is, then I may understand and get something done :D

Really appreciate any helpful replies!

- Matt.

see, there's my problem. i'm paranoid.

I've been told shift kits will kill autos and uni's and all this other stuff because they're harsh and forceful.

I've been told underdrive pulleys stuff with the RPM that the pulleys spin

Will the roller rockers need an ECU mod for them to preform?

will the stock ECU run a stock air/fuel ratio even with the bigger manifold and cause it to lean out?

All these things rack my brain, I don't know what do to first!! lol

for the money your talking id forget about heads and cam unless you can do all labour yourself and get some good secondhand goodies. b.p.t. underdrives are good bang for buck. heaps of people run shift kits in autos without problems. do you have the explorer manifold or the crappy ho?? does it have extractors and zorst or is she dead stock??

Yeah for dollars your looking at spending, i would go for an explorer manifold, u/d pulleys and twEECer or CAPA eliminator chip. That will bring up to about 200kw at the f/wheel.
Got engine bay pics?

So $1,200 - $2,000 ?

Change your intake manifold and your TB and MAF. This will give you a noticeable increase in power. Cost would be approx $600 - $700 if you install them yourself. If not then ask around for labour charges for someone else to do it for you.
If you still have enough money then you can change the heads to a better flowing second hand set like the GT40P's. This will have upgraded your engines ability to breathe better all the way from your cold air intake to the exhaust and you will definetly have more power.

Ok, so..

If I bought an explorer manifold, 65mm T/B and MAF - would I need to mod the computer at all? will it lean out or run rough or anything?

I don't have engine bay pics at the moment but i'm pretty sure I have the ho inlet.

Could someone tell me if this minor combo will work, and hopefully add prices and where to get them?

Explorer manifold -
65mm T/B -
65mm MAF -

(what brands, and can my local mechanic fit them for me?)

It will probly run alright with the above, but cannot guarantee a good state of tune (lean/rich a/f ratio). These 3 things will be nowhere near your budget quoted, so i think you should definately consider a twEECer. This will guarantee an excellent state of tune and will get the most out of the mods you have made.
Explorer manifold will definately be the one to go for (seen a few around ATM), 65mm T/B will be spot on, but as far as MAF goes, you will only be changing the housing so a 75mm one from an AU will be more appropriate as they are more common and easy to find and would definately do the job.

i'd go for the Explorer manifold, 65mm T/B pick both of these up for around 500-600 mark, might be worth getting the egr to suit as well.
maybe up date the leads, plugs, cap, button and coil?
Also try cleaning out the maf as that might be causing some problems
