Well last week my car started mising, backfiring and running like a piece of crap. I finally narrowed it down to the MAF, since the car ran great with the MAF unplugged. I figured it was shagged and started shopping for a replacement. Then the idea came about that maybe it needs to be cleaned

Sure enough, I purchased some electric contact cleaner, sprayed the hell out of it and now the car runs far better than it has in the 3 years I've owned it. I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier. I guess it will become part of my regular maintenance now.

Does anyone else service theirs regularly?

Hi Waggin,
Did you do this with the sensor still in the body or take sensor out?
Would like to do this for mine too.

Cheers Andrew

I clean everything I can think of in a service including the MAF. But I remove mine from the body and clean it with WD40 and a cotton bud.....2 minute job :)
Cheers,
Mick

Clean your maf more regularly if you have an oiled air cleaner(k and n etc) because it will draw the oil onto the maf.

Yeah, I cleaned mine by reming the electronics from the body. I was reading that both WD40 and cotton buds are both big no-no's for cleaning it though, hence buying the specialised electronic contact cleaner. It's a whopping $10 from Jaycar :)

Hi People - I have a BA Fairmont Ghia powered by a 5.4 litre 3 valve V8 engine. Does this motor have MAF sensors and if so where are they and how are they cleaned ?

Nope BA's are all speed density...therefore no MAF.

Brake cleaner or non-oily contact cleaner are all that you need to clean the hotwire. Just squirt a bit through the sample tube. The hotwires should not be touched with anything.

Thanks for the reply - I am not electronically or mechanically experienced and I have no idea of what you have replied, sorry. Could you please explain what you mean and where this tube is?

You have no MAF.

The other bit was for cars that do.

How do you remove the electronics from the TB? I tried last night and theres two screws holding it together. One is a Torx screw but the other doesn't seem to have head on it. I tried popping it off but didn't seem to work. Such a simple question but had me stumped for 20 minutes before i gave up.

BTW sorry about the thread mine. Was the most relevant when i used the search function.

I used to use Contact Cleaner on mine too and a clean MAF is a noticeable difference in fuel consumption and performance.

And, as I said before, just squirt contact cleaner/brake cleaner through the sample tube...No need to remove the electronics.
Those screws are called Security Torx.
