This may sound stupid, but is the Explorer manifold the lower or upper intake manifold. What would one of these be worth.

Yeah there is explorer upper and lower manifolds.....generally around $600

is there any point just changing the upper...Also, what manifolds did the 220Kw AU XR8 have.

All AU's got explorer manifolds as far as I know. There isn't going to be really any gain if you change just the upper manifold due to the heads being the most restrictive part. From what I've heard, the HO manifolds aren't that bad, but there is definate room for improvement. If your chasing some more power your better off pulling your heads off and giving them a port and polish, or for roughly the same price and flow invest in a set of GT40P heads which are also found on AU V8's, EL GT and FBT. These can be had for anywhere between $800 - $1200, depending on usage

I wanted to do the manifolds first coz thatd be easier and cheaper than doin heads. but wat your sayin is that basically it would be a waste of time doin the manifolds, if Im not gonna do the heads first...

You can't just change the upper manifold... they are matched to the lower (completely different pattern) so you need to change both. You will see benefits in changing the manifold. The HO manifolds are pretty hopeless. You only have to line up an Explorer manifold against a HO one to see how much.
I wouldn't say it's waste of time if not changing the heads... not at all. The heads are still a big restriction though and with significant porting would still struggle to match GT40P's in standard form. Changing the manifold is a simple job so worth doing before heads in my opinion. You will need to consider what to do with your air temp sensor as they are tapped into your existing lower whereas they are fitted to the air intake pipe on the AUs. If you haven't done so already you should think seriously about tossing your throttle body and MAF for AU spec also. |

The biggest restriction is the manifold not the heads (although they are poor too) so you will see some improvements by upgrading to the Explorer. Until you change the heads you really won't see any really decent gains but IMO it is still definitly worth while.

And the EBGT and ED XR8 Sprint Theres a Sprint/EBGT/ELGT MAF up for sale on ebay now, worth a look. ALOT bigger then your stock one.

I was under the impression that you couldn't fit explorer upper and lower to E7 heads....could be wrong though.
I reckon it would be more beneficial to do the whole lot at the one time while your in there for the sake of $1500 odd bucks, to the small gain your gonna see with just the upper explorer. MAF and throttle body need to be upgraded too....also throw in 1.72 roller rockers and a bigger cam, that'd see you pumping out some fairly good power |

They fit straight on, the only issues are the lack of ACT sensor port in the explorer lower and no EGR ports. To solve this you just have to relocate the ACT sensor into the intake piping and if you run into pinging issues (due to lack of EGR) back the timing off a couple of degrees. |

They just flow a bit more I think....

The GT40P's are a newer design of the GT40Ps. The flow slightly better with better intake velocity giving better torque and lower emissions.
