Has anyone suffered melted cats before, and if so, please tell me what the symptoms are?

my cat stuffed up some time ago. engine ran hotter than normal with a huge power loss, and then the cat started rattling. the honeycomb inside had moved so the gases couldnt flow out properly. eventually it rattled all the ceramic insides from the cat out the exhaust through the tailpipe. bits of honeycomb everywhere. im sure the ceramic cant melt as such.

Its not a 5.0L but fritzz's turbo 4.0L recently suffered a melted/blocked cat so it might be worth shooting him a PM Chad.

Easiest way to tell would be to take them both off and look into them and see if they are damaged.
If the cat pipes are short like the ones on my eb you will easily be able to see the honeycomb material and if its stuffed.

I ended up pulling one off today and that was sweet. It was a pain in the a** to put back on and I'm going to assume the other is fine until I can be a*** taking it off and checking it.

Dont ever assume its ok man, check it soon so you can rule it out as the problem.

I'll get around to it, but will probably get myself some new gaskets to replace the old ones as cleaning the old ones is a b**ch! That took twices as long as getting them out and back in.

Its heaps easier to loosen all the cat bolts on both sides and then they will come off heaps easier, the exhaust will have more freeplay to get them on and off(done mine once or twice )
Make sure you support the rear section of the zorst if you take them both off

Thanks mate. I'll probably just struggle with the one side, otherwise it'll mean putting more gasket crap in the other side as well.

symptoms would be hesitation down low, until you get higher in the rev range (sort of as if the engine is being held back).
just knock on the cat and if it rattles its pooped

Thanks SgtBourne, that's exactly what I have been experiencing, except not all the time. It just happens randomly. I'll check the other side today.
