questions regarding MSD spark amplifiers,
i have an EL XR8 with new plugs, leads, cap and rotor. also has extractors with a full twin exhaust 2.25 and k&n filter i was thinking about using one of these spark amplifiers, would there be any benifit on my car? i have heard due the chamber design on the E7s that they are not the best and burning all the fuel, would one of tehse help and give a torque and economy benifit? or is it not worth the hassel? are these a bolt in unit with no tuning required? thanks |

They are of benefit on any car. I would use a Crane Hi-6 over and MSD 6A but if you want to stay with MSD you need the Digital6 which is expensive. Otherwise the best gear is from ICE...also expensive but very good.
They are easy to fit. |

can i use the msd 5 on mine? if i buy the harness to suit 8874 i think the part no is? with the harness does it literally clip in without and cutting and soldering to the factory wiring? i just like the idea of being able to remove it. would there be a noticable improvement in torque and economy or minor?
cheers mate |

Quite a few ppl think MSD is s**t, but i havent had a prob. I was wondering if i could up the boost in my car, as i was wondering if the spark would blow out....
22 psi, and the spark is strong........If you can get either at a good price then it is just down to personal preference. I have the 6AL..... Cheers Daz

It's not that MSD is s**t...it's just the old (non-digital) type like the 6AL tends to fail more than the Digital type. I've had to fix about 8 of them. Never had to fix anything else. So it's a case of buy the digital one for reliability and piece of mind.

I have a 6AL-2 that failed after only about 8 months use. I took it in for warranty repair and when it got to the repairer over east, they reckon someone must've shorted something in my car so no warranty - have to pay $160 to solder up one output! The car was sitting at idle, then stopped running. No way there would have been a short. I like the MSD gear that I have, but have a bit of a foul taste left in my mouth after this experience with them.

I had issues with MSD but possibly wasn't there fault.. While runing a dissy and MSD A6 we found in my case spark scatter inside cap no matter how the phasing was done..
This was mainly due to LOW compression and large swings in timing and strong spark .. At some timing events where up to 50* advanced to bring turbo's / motor onto song being a manual NO load to bring on turbo .. I'm not sure Crane is still in bussness ?? They have gone broke in the states ?? Aha S&S cycles bought them out..http://cranecams.com/?show=crane-ss M&W have about the best coil ignition system out there.. http://www.mwignitions.com/ Motec re-label there ignition systems..

I had great results with the Plug and Play MSD Coil on NOS, but the Ready 2 Run billet distributor was an absolute piece of s**t. I now have the 4 tower coilpack, and with a 300shot it provided a strong spark all the way to redline, and is compatible with my aftermarket ECU. So my experience was very hit and miss, and yes Warranty work was a real issue that left a bad taste in my mouth as well.

Werent they. I brought my plug and play on the west coast as was over there for work and the dealer had one in stock. Flew back east, had it in the car for 6 weeks and it failed. I knew rocket were the distributor but they wanted me to return it to place of purchase so they could send it to them. No way i was paying postage for est to west coast, then have the original supplier return it east for fixing, then rocket ship it back west so the dealer could then sting me again for postage back to Sydney. I now only deal with Summitt or Jegs. I havent had a problem since, and they have stated that if it fails they will provide me with a replacement item and pay for shipping back to the states.
Go figure. Brett

I dealt with them once even gave em a part number somehow they botched the order and tried to tell me that's what i ordered. long story short they refused a refund and had to go through my credit card issuer to get my cash back. never again will i deal with rocket nor recommend them to any one
