Sounds like the engine is running lean. This could be due to dirty or bad injectors, fuel pump or regulator. Need to get it on the dyno and check AF ratio's then start investigating from there. Might be worth running some injector cleaner through the fuel too to clean the injectors and remove carbon deposits.

Another obvious one is clean the MAF sensors..

Ahh yes forgot about that one. Especially if you are running an oiled airfilter such as a K&N, BMC or finer filter, the oil coats the MAF wires and makes the engine run lean. Could also be a faulty MAF sensor which isn't uncommon but expensive to fix.

I would try petrol first.

My XR8 pings its nuts off when running Vortex or Optimax.

Try some octane booster first - see if that fixes it. I recomend Nulon Pro Strength. Its about $14 for a bottle that will do 1 full tank.

hi guys . my eb 5l also pings it head off
i have set the timing at about 26 degrees and it still pings on regular unleaded. i took it to a mechanic he set the timing at 10 degrees.
it didnt ping any more but it wouldnt rev past 4400 rpm. bloody wanker.
so i set it back to 26 degrees and i run bp ultimate no more ping...
but i feel there is some kw missing. i think i might have to put it on a dyno and see ...

is the sydney dyno day still on?
is it for power figures only or will somebody be doing
tuning as well???

Don't forget the O2 sensors. Highly underrated but extremely important. Has a big input into how your engine runs!

Phenolic spacer will always fix pinging as well. Should always be used if you're big into the CAI setup.

Should try setting static timing back to 30deg BTDC if you're keen to run on 98 RON. Some users have been able to tweak it to 34deg BTDC with no probs.

Rossi - yeah i agree with HEGO but if pinging occurs at full throttle it cannot be the HEGOs as EEC ignores this signal when at full throttle.

Then the Phenolic spacer will fix this garanteed! If it can reduce intake temps by 70degs at idle (car at running temp), imagine what it'll to do combustion temps.

How long has it been since you've checked your spark gaps and
leads? usually the coil lead is first to go... Dont buy cheap leads, spend
the money on quality Bosch or Eagle leads, about 140 for the v8's
