Hello there, I have just purchased a manual AUII XR8 ute with the 200kw motor, it has the factory? 4-1 headers, factory intake and a cat back 'sports' exhaust that goes from twin 2.5 inchers to a single 3 inch pipe with one muffler and one resonator.

It sounds great when you give it stick, but at low revs or light throttle, it sounds like a boomy six.

Think XR6 with extractors or even, dare I say it, an ECOTEC V6 with a big bore!

There is NO nice noise at all from up front.

I want to know what the best course of action is, I just want a sweet sounding V8 burble when cruising, as I don't want to have to cane it all the time just to please my ears!

The worst, most disgusting fact about this is that a neighbour has a GenIII ute with a single pipe and it sounds 'proper' when he burbles past every day... It's killing me!

I want to start with an Air Induction kit of some sort, but I'm not sure which gives the best sound?

Then, do I need a full twin system or will Pacemakers be a better bet? Or do I really really need both?

My final consideration was to just take it Herrods, but I want to do it step by step, and perferrably not spending too much of my hard earned...

Any advice from someone that has experience in these sorts of things would be awesome...

Thanks heaps!

Get rid of the resonator, my S1 XR8 has the same setup as yours without the resonator and it idles and sounds like an 8 should

Oh wow, I can't believe how simple and cheap that will be! Awesome, you've made my day. I'll get it done ASAP and post again with the results...

Have you tried any induction kits?

A set of extractors will make it sound much more crisp, wont sound as muffled.

Don't waste your money on a CAI, look at what others have done themselves for ideas.

The $300 odd some companies charge for CAI is almost half a set of pacemakers! And makes s**t all difference from what you can do yourself.

Easy solution, cut the tailpipe off and dump the exhaust from the rear of the twin mufflers (as you mentioned it had a twin system merging into a single 3inch.This would sound heaps better and go better too. Also keep the tailpipe sitting there to keep the boys in blue happy.lol

If you like it this way, just weld some flanges onto the rear of the mufflers and the tailpipe so you can un bolt and bolt up your little dump pipes to the mufflers and visa versa.

If you want it sound alittle more KRANKY,just remove the balance section of the exhaust so you have 2 seperate systems one on the left and one on the right if you know what i mean.

cammmmmshaft!!!

or, 3 inch system with highflow middle muffler and hot dog on the tail pipe. To go even further, add pacemaker extractors and highflow cats to get it even more beefy/tougher.

Stock extractors!? Definitely they are what is holding the great sound back. When I did my exhaust, I did cats back first. Sounded good but until I got the extractors did I realise that the stock headers make it sound like a vacuum cleaner.

The stock extractors on the 200kw engine actually look reasonably decent, I'm gonna start with removing the resonator and see how it sounds. If it's all good out back then I'll be looking at CAI's to get a bit more noise up front. Jury's still out on which one to go for tho. Might engage Mr Herrod on that one...

Thanks for you help - will report back on this issue!

Go for headers mate.

I bought my AU3 with twin 2 1/2's with 2 sets of hotdogs and it sounded nice when cruising but once I put headers on it boy did it sound different! Alot of people thought I chucked in a cam
