just get a cat back exhaust, removing the cats is overkill.

I agree there's little point in removing the cat's....
That said they do reach a point where they no longer work as originally intended. Depending on the kilometers your vehicle has travelled and other factors they may need replacing. I suggest you have the exhaust place check them out as best they can and take their advice. But be mindfull that there aren't just trying to line their pockets with your dollars. Signed, X-Mechanic |

Removing the cats is not a very good idea as it is highly illegal to do so, and will yeild little benifet if all you are after is a better note. If you want some more performance also, get a pair of high flow cats, they wont be cheap though, and they wont make a hell of alot of difference unless you have a good set of extractors anyway. If you are on a budget, just get a cat back exhaust.

In New Zealand our ONLY tailpipe emission law is that the engine cannot smoke continuously for more than 10 seconds after start-up.
Removing cats in NZ is common, I'm surprised a 1992 vintage car still has them. Even the best flowing cat is more restrictive than no cat at all, so unless mandated by smog laws there is free performance to be had in removing them If you had posted earlier I could have sent you a pair of cat-delete pipes that bolt on between header & Y-pipe.

With dyno's being slightly inconsistant each run theres possibly no difference at all..... |

id prefer to leave it on as i hate the smell of a car without it and in my opinion you wouldnt gain alot of power unless you were turbo charged as you need lots of exhaust flow

Because we are very lucky when it comes to rodding.
V8 anual registration is the same price as a 4 cylinder, about NZ$280. When modifying a car, so long as it's safe (and has been road tested as being so), you can do it No emissions laws No laws banning retrograde engine mods / installs eg EFI failure on 5.0, just fit a carb No laws limiting engine displacement / supercharging / turbocharging when re-powering, so long as it drives straight, goes around corners and stops safely it's OK No laws banning LHD imports eg a brand new camaro landed and on the road for under NZ$40k. Personally I'm looking at a new challenger But the payback comes in the price of petrol - north of NZ$2/litre
