Hi guys.
I have a series 2 EL XR8 Auto with only 135,000ks - Factory explorer manifold and EL GT extractors for those who dont know. I have a K&N filter with airbox intake, all new ignition parts and am out to put inhigh flow cats and a 3 inch exhaust to open it up a bit. Now I have been collecting parts for a budget wake up project. These are: - GT40P heads (off AU fairmont with 80,000ks only - look to be in really good condition) - AU Yella Terra 1.7 Roller Rockers - AU 65mm Throttle Body and EGR spacer - AU MAF with e - series electronics I plan to use this with the factory HO cam initially and get it tuned by Jason at TI Performance with a J3 chip which will have a base tune sent via mail then have it tweaked by a dealer of his in Adelaide. Now I have some questions: - Will I have any P/V clearance issues with this combo? - I know I need to upgrade the springs to handle the extra lift, any recommendation on what to use here and what to pay so I know Im not getting ripped off? - I am going to get the heads decked as they have gasket material on them etc, anything else I should get done? Recommendations on what this should cost? - What is the correct proceedure for checking the pre load on the roller rockers once installed? - Anything else I should know about the conversion? - What can I expect to make power and torque wise once its tuned? Thanks guys!! |

The EL II's had a bigger throttle body than previous, check to make sure its not already 65mm. Might be 60 though. PTV shouldn't be an issue with a stock cam, depends how much you mill the heads but even then it should be fine.
www.summitracing.com for parts. Excellent prices and delivery in less than 10 days. |

I doubt ul have PV issues with the stock cam, even with the 1.7's...
doesnt hurt to check anyway. get some blutac and test it before u bolt the heads down. Im assuming ul be running 24# injectors? and what manifold? Explorer? Should be a nice combo to get started...but if you're going as far as pulling the heads off why not just change the cam?? so much easier to do now rather than later. TFS1 or Crane 2031 ftw!! I had similar combo to you with a Trickflow Stage 1 (TFS1) and made 280 odd hp @ wheels (on the dyno @ summernats). I had a cobra intake, which is similar to a explorer.

It will have an explorer intake with 24 lb injectors and 3 inch exhaust.
The only reason I havnt considered the cam is that I knew with the 1.7s the stock cam would effectively be bigger and I wanted to do all the labour myself to save some cash and I am not confident about changing a cam over myself. If there was someone in Adelaide who wanted to help me do for some cash i would certainly consider it. I amhoping even with just the HO it will be a good street engine with a reasonable power increase, tuned of course. |

Another couple of questions guys...
- Can I reuse my factory head bolts or are they TTY bolts and must be replaced? - I want to put a phenolic spacer on to clear my tall rocker covers. Seeing as mine is an auto it has the double layer TPS so there is less bonnet clearance, what is the maximus size spacer I can get that will still clea the bonnet? - Will the standard pushrods (EL XR8) work with the standard HO cam and the 1.7 roller rockers?? Thanks |
