I just bought an NF with a 302 on gas a few days ago, I have a few questions.

What size are the injectors? I think it needs new ones, they have been cleaned and it doesn't run very smoothly on petrol.

What lifters should I get for it? They are very noisy, I've done an oil flush and change and it hasn't helped. I'm surprised it would need them, it only has 227K, and the heads were done 10K ago. What else should I do at the same time? (aside from the obvious things like the intake manifold gasket).

Should the steering be noticeably heavier than a 6 cylinder EF?

It also has a slightly rough idle intermittently. Idles at 700rpm dead flat, but the car shakes slightly. I've cleaned the MAF, looks really clean. What else should I do?

I haven't had a 302 before so I have no idea where to start.

Just to update this, after running it on petrol for a while it has cleared up. I have put a full tank of 98 in and I'll run that through it. Idles and goes perfect, but you can only use about 1/2 or 3/4 throttle before it won't rev any further, will rev all the way to the redline on part throttle however.

The rough idle doesn't happen on petrol, only gas.

Just shakes on gas, at idle and on light throttle, up to around 1300-1400rpm. Only intermittently though.

On petrol is perfect, until you try to use too much throttle and it just stops accelerating. If I back off it starts revving again...

the shakes could be your harmonic balancer after i changed mine my car drove like a dream
as for the lag check the dizzy cap a mate of mine has a el on gas and that was the issue or the other thing it could be running lean on gas.

If it only gets the shakes on gas, it's a gas problem. Check TPS Values using the sticky in the V8 Workshop. What heads has it got on it?

Stock, so HO I think. Its all stock.

My main problem is the noise. It really sounds like lifters to me, but everybody reckons they rarely play up and should be fine. Sounds like its coming from the drivers side rocker cover, or behind.

What else could it be?

Jonathon, theres no lag, as I said. It just stops revving, definitely injectors or fuel filter. It revs all the way on gas.

I mainly want to stop the noise. It had 15/40 oil in it, I put in some 15/50.... What else should I check?

sorry miss read
change the fuel filter if you havent done so already

make sure correct oil level, try thicker oil

if continues take the rocker cover off and check if all rollers a still tight 25-35 nm
while the cover is off clean them as they do get old oil stuck on them which ends up causing them to stick causing the tapping noise.

Yeah I did the oil today, all good. Put 15/50 in so I reckon thats about right.

I'll take the covers off tomorrow and have a look and a listen. I only need to take the upper manifold off for that I think, so that should be easy.

I'll do a fuel filter too.

Cheers.

I have a ticking noise from the right bank too. Only happens on accelleration can't really hear anything on idle until you give it a big rev.

Put the Penrite HPR 15/60 semi synth in it to no avail, if anything maybe even slightly noisier on the occasion. Have also tightened all the header bolts and had the exhaust guy look over it and he said it's definetely not the exhaust.

Ticking noise is the headers with a slight leak perhaps....

Did you do the fuel filter?- seems most likely

I will take it tomorrow to an exhaust place and get them to look. I have put in Nulon oil, runs smoother and quieter but the noise is still there.

It runs ok on petrol at night, so when the weather is cool. Can use up to 3/4 throttle. After a while it seems to warm up and then you can only use about 1/4 throttle. Backfires and refuses to rev faster otherwise.

To me this points to the fuel pump with the heat thing?

But backfiring is an ignition issue? Runs fine on gas, just idles slightly rough. I thought if it was having ignition problems they would be more pronounced on gas?

I have injectors here I'm hoping to fit tomorrow.

Thanks very much guys :D

the 3/4 throtle thing might be a rubber fuel line being crushed as the engine warms up...it happened to mine but i have a six...it was getting crushed between the starter and the engine dunno how it got there..so check that

Does an engine backfire because it is starved of fuel?
