hey guys , dad has a nf fairlane 5.0ltr, the engine is in good nick runs fine!
on a hot day when the temp guage reaches normal, it starts pinging under load, the car runs on premium unleaded/untimate, and the timing is spot on. has a cold air intake aswell. if anyone else had or has this problem and has fixed it let me know. |

could be burning a small amount of oil. that will lower the octane rating of the feul...

Check the actual temp with a manual guage of some sort as it may be getting a little too hot and leaning out

It will probably be pinging either due to timing or running lean. It is hard to check but if the outer ring of the balancer slips, then that can throw timing out big time. The most common reason though is due to the engine running lean, which is often caused by a dirty MAF (especially if you run an aftermarket airfilter like a K&N or a CAI). Ideally you want to remove the electronics from the MAF body and carefully clean the sensor wires with some carby cleaner, reset the EEC and see how it goes.

dont use carby cleaner. bad bad bad use CRC electrical contact cleaner |

CRC electrical contact cleaner is a great (I use it myself), but I was told to use carby cleaner by Ford and I know tons of people here an in the US who have used it without issues. But if you can get contact cleaner then that is your best bet, basically leaves no residue at all.

Ring Hillview Motors in The Basin. Speak to Ian and take your car there. I've heard of this problem previously, and he knows what it is. You are not going to beleive how simple this is. It's specific to those cars with 8's only.

Dammit! Apparently there is a pin that holds part of the the advance actuator that wears, when it wears you need to get a new one and match the size exactly. For some reason it was specific to thta dizzy on those cars. If its worn it messes up the advance control and pre detonates the spark. This is my recollection. You could look up the dudes number and have a chat??

You could look up the dudes number and have a chat?? I think you might have a diferent dizzy in mind there.. This is out of the Factory manual for TFI ignition: " The ignition system features a distributor design which is cam gear driven and uses NO centrifugal or vacuum advance. The distributor is conventionally mounted on the engine. The distributor has a die-cast base which incorporates an integrally mounted TFI module, and a 'Hall-Effect' vane switch stator assembly. No distributor calibration is required and initial timing is not a normal adjustment. " So all the vacuum advance is controlled by the ECU. With my car when I first got it, I did the usual plugs, leads, oil, filters etc. Did the tune as well and found it out a few deg, so I set it back to factory 10deg BTDC in diag mode and it pinged to high heaven. So I just tweaked it back a bit at a time take it for a cruise until it stopped knocking and it's been there ever since. Maybe the easiest thing to do is just tweak the dizzy back a bit, I'm guessing it's a case of a bit of chain stretch with a bit of gear wear and the dizzy is sending a PIP signal thats NQR..
