Update - 09/01/12
Got it running! It was the distributor that was causing the issues for me see page 3 for a update. Update - 01/02/12 Had issues with the dizzy moving about so had to swap back to old dizzy with new gear. Car now running and in need of some driving! Quote: My NL Fairlane die today. Started it up after sitting all night, managed to get out of the driveway and down the road about 20 meters, then stalled and would not restart. Bit of investigation and it seems there is no spark. I noticed a little bit of leakage from the coil a few nights ago but it was very minor, new one has been ordered. Car didn't have any misfires and generally ran pretty well. Have been doing a bit of searching and testing this arvo and have not turned up anything. I tried a old coil I had from the previous owner(could be stuffed so probably a bad test) and the same thing, cranks strong but does not start.
Things I suspect based on my very limited knowledge: TFI Coil ??? Any other ideas Last edited by WindeX on Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:57 pm, edited 2 times in total. |

That's my number one suspect. I had the fuel pump die about 6 months and replaced it.

Temp fit up any old coil and she'll be up and running..
I did this on an old GT40 coil temp on our XR6 and it was there for 3 years.. The bright red coil in Polynesian green under bonnet colour sort of didn't match !!!

Ignitions usually (9 times out of 10) give a hint before completely failing. The OEM V8 coils are bulletproof in my experience, unless they are switched to earth for too long.
Check you actually have voltage at the coil and TFI - it's the red (often looks pink) or red/green wire. If you don't then it's likely to be the brown EEC relay (9/10 times), the wiring to or from it, or the fuseable links. Also, check your main interior dome light circuit fuse. It needs to work A diagnostic scan would also be a good idea

It sounds exactly like when my TFI cacked it.

Damn, I was hoping it wasnt the TFI, looks a little tight in there and I am not sure if you have to remove the dizz to get to the damn thing.

Well testing with a new coil didn't give the desired results unfortunately, will start tracking upstream of the coil.

Well did a bit more testing, got power to the coil. Tried hooking a spare spark plug and lead directly to the coil, should that give spark? I wasnt seeming to get any other of it.

Well I pulled the dizzy out and it has stripped the teeth on it. Major bummer with this car, was meant to be a nice toy. can I just put a new dizzy in there or do I need to pull the rest down to see what's going on in there?

Probably best to try and find out why it stripped the teeth. I've never heard of or experienced that before. Maybe someone fitted a cast iron gear?? You can check that with what's left of the gear. But you have little to loose by fitting a new gear and giving it a whirl - the oil pump should be protected by the filter screen. I'd turn it over by hand a couple of revs before starting it though, just in case one of those broken pieces ended up tangled in the cam chain.

Fortunatly I think there will only be about 3-4 chunks in there as it didnt shred all the teeth just enough to make a flat spot. Any suggestions on where to get a dizzy from?

Just replace the driven gear. Fit a Mallory gear to suit a stock 351W Ford dizzy. Mark/measure the height of the original gear before removing so the new one can be fitted at EXACTLY the same height on the shaft.
Otherwise someone on the forum may have a buggered TFI dizzy that could donate the driven gear??
