just a quick question guys

i own a series 1 au xr8 and there is a noise which sounds lke its coming from the diff, its sounds like a hammer hitting sumthing. Its generally at its worst when im cruising between 60 and above and i can clearly here it from inside the car, and also a slight wobble can be felt too. i think it has sumthing to maybe do with the type of oil and or pretension set on the pinion bearing, but im no expert so if anyone has encountered this problem before that help me out that would be appreciated.

cheers

Could be backlash from the diff or if it happens over bumps maybe a worn knocking shock. Another thing could be a worn UJ (universal joint)

Being XR8 it would be IRS, it could be the drive shafts mate, CV joints might be knocking.

I forgot to add if it was a worn UJ there would be a driveline vibration over about 80km/h it would be quite bad especially if the UJ was worn enough to knock at 60 km/h. Best to check anyways but i would doubt if its the UJ.

Do you guys know what the pinion but tension is? and if there is a collapsable spacer in the AU diff?

Could be a broken shock mount...there are more than a few guys with IRS AU's out there that have had this problem.

Open the boot, and remove the boot carpet so you can see the top of the shock mounts (from inside the boot). Then have someone bounce the car up and down on either side.

Should be pretty obvious if they are stuffed.

You mean a Crush sleeve, to set the Pinion pre load yeah?

One thing you could do is grab the tail shaft and see how far you can turn it before it locks up, there should be bugger all movement in it.

If it has a lot of slop in it and after ruling out you uni Joints next step would be to pop the diff face off and check the backlash with a dial indicator, if that is within spec then the culprit is probably the CV’s, and I bet they would be fun to change on a IRS set up.

I've gotta change my shafts soon, i've got a driveline vib and i get the feeling it's the CV's causing it, plus i heard it knocking when i pulled out of a servo a cpl of weeks ago so i'm changing them either way.
