Mid 40s gave it away.
It doesn't look like they'll be doing any wheelstands in that puppy! Would do a mean burnout though

Makes you wonder why Ford didn't put into production a passenger car V8 from what they learnt from doing that V8, I thought the Cadillac V8 I worked on in a tank was pretty modern for a mid 40's V8, that Sherman tank engine makes it look prehistoric.

It looks tuf, but what does it weigh? the thing looks like it would weigh 2 tonnes. it'd be like trying to accelorate, i dunno, a tank!

I'd say with 1424nm available at 2200rpm it could easily be direct drive and she would get that Stang moving as the Sherman weighed 30 Tons !!!. 500hp at only 2600rpm would destroy those bags in no time
The original V12 was in a plane so it can't be too heavy and it is alloy. It does seem odd that Ford built this alloy DOHC engine back in the 40's yet the later car engines were iron pushrods !!!!! |

probably not as heavy as it looks being alloy. the US gov would have payed a mint for that engine, its cost of production in 1940 would have been staggering.
To mass produce in a competetive market with that construction method and with those materials would have been unfeaseable even 15 years ago. its a shame the way market influence can work against developement just as much as it can compell evolution.

It would still be very heavy. Even being an alloy block, it still would have steel liners, steel crank, rods, cams, etc and they would be very heavy. The crank alone must weigh a couple hundred pounds! 1100 cubes of ANYTHING will be a heavy engine. Be interesting to see what sort of HP it makes now. Seems like a lot of time and money for a relatively small output. Dare to be Different i suppose....

small output?
500hp aint small espically at only 2500rpm! you could idle the thing and it would smoke tyres!

Yeah, "small output"
You can get 500hp from a 302w with a single 4 barrel, and it would be a sh*tload easier. As for the torque, where is he gonna use it? Maybe in a truck, or for climbing up brick walls. It will do great skids at very low rpm, but what's the fun in that. Go get a 500HP CAT diesel out of a truck and away you go. This guy has done this for one reason - the toss factor of having the heads, etc sticking out thru the bonnet. It will be in top gear in about 3 feet, and be as exciting as a prime mover running around bob-tail. WOW!
