Growing up Back in the '70's I sometimes used to catch a bus from my home town in Albany to Perth. The buses were Hino's run by Westrail. My mates and I always used to think they had a wicked note. Rusting away outside my work is this old bus and it's quite possible I actually rode in this one. Here's why they sound so good....

This engine is from the Ford Super Duty truck 401/477/534 engine family.
Originally developed in the late 50's it is petrol and has a mechanical cam. That water pump(the outlet is 2 1/2" diameter) almost looks like a centrifugal blower!
This is the emissions sticker, this one being a 477ci job from 1975.

The intake/carb is missing but you can see the unusual head interface

Exhaust manifold.

The oil filter is about twice the diameter of an AFL-1

The wreck.

If anyone has any pics of the carb setup I'd be interested in seeing it?
Cheers,
Pete.

Holy f**k, check out the single port heads!
It's hard to believe it's only 1975, it looks more like 1935.

Ha ha, they're not single port heads. It's like a manifold that goes between the intake and the heads. There are actually normal ports inside(the dark bit is actually #3 port) there but certainly those things don't do it favours in terms of flow.
I think you'll find it's physically much larger than the AMC 287 Bowsaw.
Interesting figures there waggin....I wonder if this later one makes any more or less power. At 7.5:1 it's itching for a blower or turbo.
Of course these days you'd just stroke a 460 and use that...much lighter and smaller.

Pete.

Aint much of a difference between 477 and 534, thought it would be a lot higher, but i reckon it would go forever.

Well, being that the 534 makes peak torque at 1700rpm is pretty cool :P

I think you'd be able to light the tyres in a falcon from idle, in 3rd gear :)

Ah at a closer look i see what you mean now Pete, it does look like a single plane manifold running off in 4 directions going by the pics.

I'm love to know how much it weighs.
