@ T6

yes i am sure there are many passionate mechanics , the majority i have found are not. not trying to flame not trying to say i am right or wrong just giving another side of the story.

@ everyone
my oppinion is do the work yourself that way you know its done how you want it done.

Maybe they were not changing the filter and leaving the oil in it.

But what sound more likely, they do a change that quick they don't wait for all the oil to drain out.

leaving the plug out for 15 mins while checking the rest of the car over seems like plenty of time to let oil drain.

personly i let my car drain for 30 mins but thats not very usful when your trying to make a leaving

i really wish some of you people could see things from our side

This thread has been dragged up from the bottom.
I'd like to clarify that when I said most mechanics I meant the ones I had been to. I wouldnt want to cast aspertions on all mechanics when I dont know them.
I do understand mechanics need to make a living and have time constraints when servicing a car so they can service more cars during the day.
Myself I would rather pay more money and know they are doing a better job than one that is cheap and does bucket loads of cars per day.
Hence why I change my own oil.

If properly drained they take 5 1/2 litres

I beg to differ there, because I have been changing the Oil & Filter on my EL myself for the past 5 years and I always seem to be only able to fill it up completely with only 4.8litres of Oil even after waiting a day later to let ther Oil settle through out the Motor.

I think offyaguts was referring to the 302's.

But I definantly put 5L of oil into both my i6's and V8

So we are both right then! Give or take a Couple hundred ml's.
So that begs the question for Offyaguts how in the hell is he able to fit that extra 1/2 litre in :?: Unless he is overfilling it?

i6 specs IS 5.5L with filter. obviously it will vary a bit in the real world depending on how much drains out.

Even if you do know the Mechanics personally why not still do it yourself? Unless your someone incapable (physically disabled, mentally handicapped, what ever - al;thoguth I'd be wondering why you have a car to drive then) there's no real reason why anyone can undo a sump plug, catch the oil, twist of a filter, twist on a new one, do up the sump plug and fill up with oil. It takes what 20 minutes if your listening to the radio and going slow.

I can personally say to this, ive done it and it took me longer than 20min to jack the car up onto stands, undo plug, drain oil, take filter off, new filter, put new oil in, run car, level the oil levels to correct spot, drop car,,
Not to mention not everyone has the enrgy/time all the time, of course if u got nothing better to do on a day n need it done, by all means go for it!
I take mine to a mech i know, i know for fact he drians every bit out he can as soon as i get there and once didnt believe him n made him flush it out after said he wasnt sure if it all came out.
Have been to ford for a service on my old car, never again, they TOPPED up the oil, not drianed it i tell u, there were no marks on my sump plug, covered all the same with dirt - like to know how they got it out, C***, was still dark coloured n told me that hows it is, i didnt agree. They also charged $12 something for a brake light globe they SAY they replaced which i know they didnt coz the fairlane tells you when one goes out, fkn dodgy pricks i tell u! not to mention the price, labour inclusive they say.

I dont do my oil changes myself, mainly cos I dont have the tools to do it. (I have 1 sissor jack, and no stands), so I will either go to a mates house, or if I need to get other stuff done, I will get my mechanic to do it.

Its not that I dont know how to do it (I used to do them for my dads cars, but they were on hoists), its just easier to get it done elsewhere.

spend 80 bucks on some ramps and a decent catch tray and give yourself the peace of mind knowing all that money you invested on your engine modds arn't gonna last buggerall time.

if you'r at all interested in geting the best out of your car here's somthing to think about. I read in a car mag (engine masters I think) a 1/4 inch difference in oil level cost around 10hp through increased windage. It was a high output moter but even 5 horspower and longer engine life is well worth a small investment in time and money.

according to workshop manuals, for EBs, i6 is 5.5L and v8 is 5L..

if you have an i6 and 5l brings you up to full, let the car run for 5 minutes then check again.

let us know what happens.

just on oil replacement i heard once that when you drain it, replace plug, put in some kero and run the engine for 10 sec then drain it will help remove all the oil...

I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS cos it sounded dodgy but since there are some qualified mechanics here... whats your opinion??

Jeez that does sound dodgy. I'd rather waste another 5 litres of oil and drive around the streets for 30 minutes and then drop the new oil and replace it again.

I've only ever heard the old kero trick for cleaning up engines that have been sittin around for donkeys years.

Im suprised to read how many people pay to have their oil changes done. Lol, i actually look forward to getting under there and changing the oil... maybe its just me?!? The joys of never working on weekends is suppose....

Amazing what else you find when you're under the car dropping the plug...

Coolant/oil leaks... suspension problems... parts of hoses you cant see from any other angle... etc etc... im guessing if ppl dont have 30 minutes.cant be bothered to change the oil themselves, they dont have time/patience to go prying around down there on basic maintenance sorties...

Yeah, I was hoping for a more humurous reply as well Bentfairmont...
You do make a good point though 4.9...
Don't just see an oil change as an oil change, take the oppurtunity to check suspension rubbers, lower radiator hose, and s**t like that.
