G'day peoples;
Over the past few days, my el xr8's oil pressure guage indicates that the oil pressure spikes randomly.. The guage normally sits on 2/3 although spikes past the high redline within a split second, as far as the guage goes. The red light indicating the pressure is too high does not come on, nor does an audible alarm sound? It remains within this high zone for random amounts of time, ie. a few seconds to a couple of minutes, before returning to its original pressure reading of 2/3? The car is a 1997 model el xr8, manaul, 145,000kms.. So still fairly fresh. I was meant to be putting the car up for sale over the next few days, so this is a bit of a pain! haha. Cheers guys. |

Most likely bad connection on the sender or a bad earth in the system somewhere, check these first before going any further.

I agree, I've got the same issue with mine, just too lazy to fix. When they get a bad earth they spike to maximum. Can happen on and off, mine does.

Ahhh really?? So nothing to worry about for the time beaing you think?
Also, if the oil pressure was actually too high, would an audible alarm sound as well as the red warning ligh appear under the guage? |

Is there any way I can distinguish between the fault actually being the guage as opposed to an actual oil pressure increase? |

The best way is with another gauge that you know reads right. May be a little hard to use a mechanical workshop style gauge while driving the car though.
I would be checking the connection to the pressure sensor and giving it a good clean first off and depending on what kind it is, maybe giving it a harder crimp.

Mine stays high. Checked in diag mode and it says it is 9. What is the cause of this. My engine has done 265000ks.
Thanks
