G'day Guys.
I have a EF 5ltr with a moderately low km engine ~135k. On start up it has a tappety sound that goes away after 1-2 secs. After checking the oil levels (were fine, slight top up 3rd of a litre). I normally do use a 15w 40. Just out of curiosity, is there a better grade for stopping the tappet sound? A mate reckons its taking a tad to long for the oil to reach the lifters because its too thin. Would a oil stabiliser help? (lucas oil stabiliser?) Just want to iron the wrinkles out before the blower goes on. Cheers

I use 20/50 yellow shell and lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and my eb still ticks for a second or two on startup but apart from that it helps alot with the worn rings I reckon maybe try 20/50 in your xr and see how it goes but i dont think your car should need an oil stabilizer,it would make the oil too thick.I used lucas in my au and it made it worse because it didnt need it.Every motor is different though jas so maybe just try a few things and see what works best.

Try some Mitsubishi Oil, its 15W50, and I use it in my I6 and it stops the tappety noise, along with some Nulon E20.

The Tappet noise is normall.
Ive seen brand new falcons do it with less than 5kms on the dash. And my car does it to. I investigated left the car parked then dismantled the top end and there was no oil left in the lash adjusters. When you first start up the oil is pumped up there and they set the adjustment. It does not cause any damage. I dont worry about it. |

was it the same brand? a 15-40 and a 15-50 are identical weight when cold but the 50 will be slightly thicker when hot. not the issue the original poster is having. could be a lifter issue rather than an oil issue. 15-40 or 50 should be fine but as mentioned all engines vary as they get treated differently. i run a 5 - 40 in mine with no drama's (helix ultra). does it do it more so when the car is left for long periods? could be a lifter leaking down. not to sure on the exact workings of the lifters but they should hold pressure and if its not and having to pump up every time then that will cause a ticking noise. not a massive job to change them but big enough. whole intake has to come off. you could try going from a 15 to a 20 and see if that makes any difference. you could even try a different brand of oil. different manufacturers have different ingredients and may make a difference. i also never add anything to my oil. oil companies spend millions on oil development and most decent oils already have the same benefits that additives claim to give.

Cheers what is making this happen is the oil is to thick it used to do it to me with my V8 EB, i had the same Q u asked and i was told 15/40 oil and that fixed it no more tappet on cold start, when you do your next oil change change the filter and use the thinner oil, as that will get around your motor much faster than the thiker oil, thus stopping the tappet sound.

I was refering to my car. however V8's also use oil to adjust the lifters. (pushrods) |

And with the lash adjusters, my boss engine sometimes does the tick tick for a couple of seconds when its been left in the shed for too many nights.

As long as it stops a few seconds after the engine has been started its not classed as a problem by ford or myself.

Must use the correct oil for the correct engine, they are all different, go with manufacturers recommendations, they spend millions on research, no point using the oil NOT recommended....... Pentite HPR10 is recommended, and thats what I use in my XR8, never had any problems, mobil1 is even better I have been told but the price is up there, and most serious racers run penrite oil... |

When u are about to change your oil, drop a litre out, add 95LE(auto oil) 1ltr back in. Go for a cruise. use first gear, goto the rev limiter and engine brake to a stop. do this a few times. flushes lifters with higher pressure and flow from oil pump. Carry out oil change. Chances are this will work. Worked a treat on my old 4.1rod motor... considering u have to take head off to replace lifters.
The 95LE has cleaning additives and won't froth up. Thinner oil will get in and absorb water\corroded metal. U may want to flush out, i don't bother. handy tip and cheaper than that nulon stop tick stuff that completely doesnt work.... ohhh and better than that engine flush which kills your seals. |
