hey guys, i got a small bend on my exhaust fixed up today and they guy said that the exhaust doesnt sound real tough, more of a hum that bark. The exhaust is on an au xr8 ute and is 2.5" with one hotdog in the middle then over the diff splits into twin 2 1/4 with a small muffler on each pipe, he said that when the system dies i should redo it all with 3" to the diff then twin 2 1/4, all with mandrel bends.

So im thinking should i replace the exhaust which is in decent condition or do the headers and cats to get the "real" V8 sound.

I didnt notice a difference when i put extractors on my Xr6, only when i did the cat

Why can't you go with a full twin system instead of a half twin get the true sound or go with full 3inch single.

Search US Mustang forums, or the Flowmaster website and see what a good windsor sounds like.
I have always run Flowmasters, have a 3"center in side out series 40 on the GT and sounds FAT.
Most NASCARS and Sprintcars run flowmasters, they have an awesome range.

i cant go twin all the way because of the gas tank that runs the same way as petrol tank, so it has to be one pipe and i like the look of dual at the back, fills the rear in more.

I know it wont sound as good as straight petrol but just something better than now would be good, its a work car after all

Get the headers and cats done. You need the extra grunt after losing a tad with the LPG system. Itll make it sound throatier also.

Anyone hear got headers put on a BA V8? I'm in the same boat as u markmgm. I've got a BA V8 mont and wont it to sound like a V8. I went to an zorst shop and he said not to bother with headers because the cost of the work involved wouldn't be worth it(think he just didn't wont to do it). Goin to get a new mid section and put in and some straight through pipe at the back.

if its a stock motor-the AUIII headers will be fine. spend money on cats (if they need replacing) and a nice 21/2"cat back system. will sound nice, the series 3 headers should flow fine for a stockish motor, so dont waste money on headers.

Thanks guys, the headers are 4-1. ive heard that just buying cats and cutting the flange off the headers and weld cats to them that its good enough. i wont be doing anymore engine work, just the intake, exhaust and possibly diff gears because its auto.

I did notice that the cat changed the sound heaps on my XR6 and pacemakers did sweet FA.

on my old xr8 ute that was manual,i had hm headers to the y then 3"to just over the diff then spilt into twin 2 1/4out like the originals.had 1 muffler in the centre and sounded tuff as especialy though the gears.car was s/charged and allowed it to breath that much better with this exhaust

go too loud with a single pipe on a ute and it will drone bad
for my sedan i had the stock xr8 headers, stock cats and 2.5in redback with centre hotdog and rear resi and it was quiet as, unbolted the rear sections and it sounded good but little bit of drone due to the exhaust dumping under the car
now i have 2.25 duals with 2 hotdogs and no balance pipe and its sounds very old school and loud but with a balance pipe should sound less fluffy
next time round i'm doing a either a single 3in with 1x flowmaster 40 series or dual 2.5in with a single resinator each side and balance pipe dumped behind the rear wheel with stock chrome tips out the back to make it look standard
past experience with my old eb 5.0l after putting pacemakers on and modified std cats it got quieter
exhaust guy said the try-y's even out pulses for a smoother sound so if thats the case i'd only use 4-1's in the future
p.s. my dual system will be forsale for $150 (cost of hotdogs fitted) to suit an au v8 with irs
