Im having a panic attack!

Here goes, the last few weeks my car has started to make a slight clunking noise from the engine whenever i start my car. I demonstrated the noise to a mate (mechanic, just qualified), and he diagnosed it rather quickly as 'piston slap'!

It only happens when i start the car after it has been off for a while..
If i start it let it run for a few seconds til the noise stops, stop it, then start it again, it doesnt make the noise.

Its at its worst of a morning before work, the clunking noise last for around 3 seconds, but is really noticible/audible!

The car has been having regular oil changes, ie. between 5 to 10K kms and never gets redlined, as its manual.

The car was last serviced around 7,500kms ago..

The car has been well looked after and has only 88000kms on the clock..

Does it sound like piston slap?
If so, what does this mean? Ie. where do i go from here?
*crosses fingers that its not..*

Not saying you have the same thing but a mate of mine had bad conrods that did that; just a spanner to throw into the works.

I wouldnt worry too much, once you know what it is it will be easily addressed.

No way.. Not the windsor. My (uneducated) guess bring it down to bad oil and/or filter.

How old is the engine? Use Penrite HPR15 or 30 and use a genuine Motorcraft filter.

Yeah I would try some new oil and see if it still occurs. The Windsors tend to like thin oil even, I have always run Shell fully synthetic 5w50 and found that great (but expensive). Something like the Shell Semi-Synthetic which I think is around 15w50, or any major brand thinner oil would be a good option.

Change the oil anyway...It could be a rattly tappet??

Sound typical of oil draining from some place in the engine (i.e hydraulic lifters) and they knock till the oil gets pumped to those places.

I once saw a "just qualified mechanic" fill an engine up with oil. Twas a Camira. After all the training about cars he'd done, he filled the engine till the oil covered the cam shaft (overhead cam on those thing).

He put about 20L of oil in a 1.8L camira engine!!! So, no offence to your mate, but I would be taking his advice with a big grain of salt!!

Good s**t, ur feedback has kinda raised my hopes again..
Now, ive just gotta hope that it IS on of the things u guys suggested, and nothing else! lol

The tappets are fine. Hardly even hear them, if at all. Its more of a knocking sound.

Yeah i think the timing might be out a little too. Ive never had tune up since ive had the car (6 months/8000 kms). Its a lil rough on idle now too.

So what would be the best oil for me to use? I dont care how much, just some good stuff. Also, what brand oil filter would i best use in conjuction with this oil?

Thanks fellas! ;)

A lot of Ford mechanics I know recomend the Shell range, either the semi or fully synthetic depending on how hard you drive the car. I have used the valvoline filters and they seemed fine, Motorcraft also a good option.

Is it a dull kocking sound? How many kays has it done all up? It could begetting old and the bottom end starting to loosen up guite a bit. My cab started doing that around 200,000kms ago and it still goes alright. Its got 410,000 on the clock now with plenty more to come. Original engine, 2nd gearbox and 2nd diff.

As seen in the first post:

"The car has been well looked after and has only 88000kms on the clock.."

So which of the 2 types of oil is better for which driving style?
Ie. would fully synthetic be better for the more 'aggresive' driver or vice versa?

Cheers.

Fully synthetic maintains its properties for longer and under harder conditions so is better for high performance engines. For normal daily drivers, standard mineral or semi synthetic is ok.

Cool.
Can you recommend a specific type of fully synthetic oil i should use?
That way i can change it asap so see if the oil is causing this *fingers crossed*
