They are hit an miss.... they plug into the J3 port (which is good) but they are tuned remotely on a simulator. They adjust the tune to suit 98 octane. Can also get powerchip 95 for premium...
Personally i think you would achieve a similar result bumping the timing up a couple of degrees and running 98 octane...

Yeah exactly, bump the timing up and save youself $600 which can be put towards other mods. The EEC used on the 5L engines is quite a good unit and can cope with some pretty heavy mods. A lot of 5L's get to 180+rwkw without any chips or EEC mods at all although they would peobably see some improvements at that level but only with a custom tuned chip. |

I can recomend the unichip for slight mods, but do it as the last mod as retunes are not cheap. Mine cost me 995 fitted

So how does one advance the timing? I'll never know until I'm shown or told... I rarely figure out stuff on my own, but seem to cotton on quite well

Hahahaha, well i was trying to put it more delicately... but yeah, good call. Dave - just like any other car, with a timing light, loosen the dizzy and rotate... Need to put engine into diagnostic mode, timing should then be static (easy to see with the timing light). Ford spec is 30 degrees BTDC +/- 2 degrees. So bump her up to 32 and see how she goes. Or the yankee style is to pull the connector from the TFI module and it should revert to 10 degrees BTDC static timing... bump timing up, turn the engine off and plug it back together. Just be careful... you cant always hear detonation.

cheers I'm no expert but i believe chiptorque plugs into the J3 port on the bottom of the EEC. Very easy to install if this is the case... Disconnect the battery, unplug the harness and remove EEC. Take the case off and remove the blanking plug from the J3 port... clean the terminals very very very well but dont damage them. Put the case back on EEC, plug the chip in and put back in the car. Attached is a picture of the CAPA chip im running, fitted to EEC

You'll find that once the plug is removed, there is a grease-like substance which has been put on the J3 connector... Wipe the majority off with a cloth... then gently gently gently scrape each and every finger on the connector. This is real important, i had one part not 100% clean and the engine went loopy!! Dont use any solvents or anything, just wipe and scrape... And BTW whatever ford put on there is apparantley very poisonous.. so no eating it!! lol

Instructions say wipe off silicon with a cloth and then use a small scraper (blade) to scrape all the contacts. I also used some alcohol and electrcal contact cleaner to clean it up, just dont use any harsh solvents and anything that leaves a residue.

No, unless you were really rough and took the entire strip off, then you would have to re-tin it with some solder. I was fairly rough with mine to make sure it was really clean. |
