I'm having problems trying to get an aftermarket (Bursons) oil seal to fit. Every time I try to tap it into place, it pops out somewhere else. The repair manuals say to use a special tool but these don't appear to be available.
Does anyone have an easy method of seating the seal without damage? It's more difficult lying under a car trying to fit it too.

I actually did mine a couple of weeks ago..
yea it was a trying task.lol I used the old seal over the new seal and hit it in, that way I was hitting the old seal.. it did pop out a few times but with a bit of pressure on one side I worked my way around, it did go in after a few attempts but was a tight fit.. tighter than any 6 cyl seal iv fitted..lol try using a touch of oil to help it slide in.. |

Thanks Troy. I'll try that method. I've just put a stainless steel repair sleeve on the crankshaft to try and eliminate future leaks. Up to No. 2 seal now after damaging the first one.
I was looking at making something to mirror the centre of the flywheel and then tightening the bolts in order to force the seal in. Seems lots of people have problems with these leaking after they're installed.

I was taught if you dont, the first time you crank it after replacing the rear main it will chew the inside of the seal out slightly causing it to leak from the word go, Ive used vaseline EVERY time and never ever had a drama.

The I6 requires a tool to be made on a lathe... Ford manual specifies the measurements for it... You just line it up and use 2 or 3 flywheel bolts and it works like a press... I borrowed one when I did the AU motor in my ED...
Always use use some grease in the inner groove to prevent friction and help seal the oil in and loctite master gasket on the outside to ensure it never spins in the block... Works a treat... Cheers, Tim
