Hi there,
Im new to this forum. I have recently purchased a 1998 XH2 S-pack V8 ute with the factory 5.0 EFI windsor and 4 speed auto. The problem is when you press the accelerator more than about a quarter the engine stumbles badly like its running out of fuel or timing is way retarded. It starts and idles well. Have replaced spark plugs, airfilter so far. I am new to injected V8's Does any one know how many of these utes were made? i gather they are reasonably rare. Any help much appreciated |

Start with the basics. I'd check the timing first, if that is OK, the start looking at everything else. How old are the plugs/leads/dist cap & rotor/air filter/fuel filter? If you are not sure, replace them all. The injectors may need a clean/service. Worst case, replace them. Good luck.

^^^^ Don't bother looking for it, as the XH V8's run a dizzy just like the EF/EL V8's.

250k kms is a bit excessive on a set of leads, get a new set.
If the leads are original so would the dizzy cap and rotor, and are probably in worse shape than the leads. Then do the fuel filter. And give the Maf sensor a clean.

get a can of carbycleaner and spray it around the inlet manifold gasket and vaccum hoses if the engine responds to it that tels you that it is sucking air through there and it will be leaning out. got access to a scan tool?

+1 fuel filter.
Ford diagnosed exactly the same problem with my car as a faulty MAF (of course they would...) but it turned out to be the fuel filter. The car was just struggling for fuel. Also replace the little adaptor between the fuel pump outlet and the hard fuel line on the pump bracket. Mine was leaking, spraying fuel back into the tank and reducing pressure in the line. Mike

Un-plug MAF sensor.
Remove rubber intake elbow. Remove air-box lid with MAF on it. Using a tamperproof bit, carefully remove the sensor from the side of the MAF. You'll then see the two hotwires. Carefully spray them with some electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner untill they are visibly clean. Re-assemble ensuring intake elbow is tight and MAF is plugged back in.
