Does pinnochio have wooden balls?
![]() Yeah that would be the underdrive pulleys you are thinking of. Basic theory is to slow down the drive of alternator, power steering pump etc. by changing the size of the pulleys. This has the effect of less parasitic drain on the engine, meaning more power is output to the gearbox and more at the wheels. Check out the Extreme Velocity forum here on Fordmods. Shane has many a happily underdriven customer.

will underdrives affect the functioning of the "alternator, power steering pump etc" at all?

Little to no charge at idle, however charges fine once engine revs a little. Everything else will be fine otherwise you'd be seeing a lot of anti-pulley threads.
For more information, please search for previous threads.

I have put them in quite a few cars and the before and after drives showed there was an obvious improvement - the NL 5.0 with the March kit now pulls much harder in the low to midrange power band and seems to accellerate quicker in those ranges. It also gets a little better fuel economy. Even my business partner could feel the difference before and after - with the wheels spinning down the road on a car feeling gutless before the conversion was done.
There is a trade off with charging at idle but mine gets full charge at 1600 rpm so as long as you aren't stuck in a 3 hr traffic jam I can't see anyone having too many problems. Mine has never flattened the battery or had dimming lights - and I have never had a complaint from any of my customers. Talk to the BA guys running the underdrives who have fitted them to their's and tell me they make no power... Shane

They work, i have them on my 5.0, increased bottom end torque, and the motor revs much freeer. There is a noticable difference when fitted, but didnt notice much on the Dyno. It made more power and torque below 3500rpm, and reved freer above 3500.
Thats my 2 cents worth Brett

They're in my car. Power noticed throughout rev range. Due to the fact that the pulleys are made of a lighter material, the engine will rev a lot quicker as well. For how much they cost, I don't see how you can go wrong.

The AU is a no go - because the harmonic ballancer and crank angle sensor are intergral to the bottom pulley no-one services them even though I have bounced emails off all the manufacturers of underdrives in the US.
The EB I can do - the Ford racing kit is $275 + postage. To be as honest as I can be - I use the gear I sell in my own car. I will never make my fame and fortune selling stuff for the EB-EL 5.0's because there just aren't that many getting modified in Australia. If it gear didn't work I just wouldn't sell it..... Shane

Yeh, i've got the March kit in my stock'ish 5L. As per all the other happy customers, love them.
Fuel consumption has dropped from a thirsty 22L/100 down to 18L/100.
