Hi all,
Just wondering if anybody has fitted 302 con rods into a 351 clev? If so what was the result? I am about to rebuilt 351 and have been told that if you use 302 rods and flat top pistons it will rev smoother. JUST WONDERING IF IT'S WORTH THE HASSLE FOR THE OLD XY?

The six inch rod does improve the stroke/bore ratio. From what I have been told they do rev a bit quicker. You need special pistons but for it to work due to the different rod length.

Based on that fact my Mum is the best around! |

ACL make pistons for the combo, bearings are same, makes no more power as such, but will hold piston at TDC longer for better burn. Could really work with right heads...

Hypatec make a better piston for this combo and it's available forged as well.

Hey, my engine that is about to go back in my xe has the 302 clevo rods with 351 clevo crank, was told by the engine builders (Trick and Mansweto racing) that the motor will rev harder with the 6 inch rods, with all the mods i have including the edelbrock rpm air gap manifold, ported 2v heads, stage 9 crow cam, 750 d/p an d flat top pistons , and the engine bored out 30thou, was told the motor shold be making 420-450hp at flywheel, have not had it dynoed yet, shold be a good mix of torque and revs...Vito.

Thanks heaps to all who replied. As for the Government getting my money. If they don't get it, I don't get paid and can therfore not afford to try this.
Thanks again Graeme

are the 302 rods any stronger then the 351 rods? or is it just for the extra length?

Just the length. You could beam polish them and then get them shot-peened for more reliability, and fit them with SPS or ARP rod bolt sets. I have done this in the past. These aren't Clevo rods, but you get the idea. These rods haven't been shot-peened.

the 6 inch combo i built had acl pistons and it destroyed itself in no time with huge bore and piston wear , im talkin 20thou in less than 10000km , just massive wear , you could move the pistons from side to side ,it wa unbelievable , that engine had 2 things that ive never done before , one was gulf wetern oil the other was 6 inch /acl rod combo
and i will never use either again |

i would put the wear down to poor machining or wrong rings bore finish. The longer rod wouldn't cause that wear. oils are oils

Or the engine got "Dusted". poor sealing of airfilter, choke butterfly actuating rod hole not blocked off, airfilter not oiled ( if oiled type)...

There is a similar mod like that ( 302 rods, 351 crank) for the Xflow I6's. Using 200 rods in a 250 with the special pistons made by ACL.
