hey, im considering a project car in the near future, and after careful decision and some help from my brother i decided to pick up a tc/td cortina.

now i haven't actually gone out of my way to pick up one yet, just browsing around mainly looking for a good body to work with. my goal is to fit it with a 347 stroker making around 500hp in n/a trim hopefully but to be able to get it street registered. i live in queensland and was unsure about laws regarding doing this sort of modification etc. and was wondering if there's any people on this forum who would know if this is possible.

my questions are:

can it be done legally?
will it have to be a six cylinder model to do this legally because of the whole "engine 3 times the capacity/power rule"?
what kind of suspension/braking upgrades have to be done to make such a swap legal?
what does the car have to go through for the engineering inspection (like what exactly do they look at?)
will it be legal when the power to weight ratio legislation comes in?

that's all the questions i could think of off the top of my head right now, this will be the first time i've done an engine swap on a car. seems easy enough to do :) any help will be greatly appreciated.

As with alot of questions to this effect, the best bet is talking to the engineer that's going to sign off on it all if registration is your goal. No two engineers are the same and I personally feel you should be finding your engineer before even buying the shell. Seen plenty of cars, particularly on here in the earlier days with b series motors not getting engineered in e series. The more exotic the engine swap, the harder it gets.

Being a pioneer is definitely not easy. But kudos to you my friend because on a personal note, that project will kick a** lol

your best off getting it engineered first with a "normal" 302 making SFA power to simplify the whole engineering experience then stroke it afterwards

^^^ had a thought that might've been easier to do that.

i just printed out like 80 pages of legislation gear off the net about ADR compliance stuff and whatnot. should make an interesting read.

i also thought another way it could be done is buy one that's a roller but already engineered for a 351 as i might be able to get away with the smaller capacity motor maybe. the only thing would be power to weight ratio i guess.

i'm pretty sure that june 1976 was when the catalyitic converter was made a mandatory item to have in the exhaust system as one of those eviromental things.

nope, no cats untill much later - 76 was around the time charcoal canisters and PCV systems became mandatory.

Crucial date is 1 Jan, 1974 - this is when ADR27 came into effect....(the main pollution one)
This is why I lurv that my car was built Dec 1973....

EDIT: ADR27A is 1976...
