I have this weird rattle / vibration that occurs between 2200 rpm and 2400 rpm while driving. If i rev the car in Neutral to this rev range it doesn't make the noise. This led me to believe that i may be in the gearbox but i recently got a fully rebuilt one, new flywheel and spigot bearing and new clutch. Any ideas??

Might be pinging under load.

Good call vic.
Knock your timing back a degree or two or make the switch to 95/98 RON fuel. Id go for the second of these two. Good/cheap/easy thing to investigate anyways.

I had a rattle between 1100 and 1600, and it was one of my Cats ratling.
It scared the s**t out of me, because it sounded like a Bearing. |

Is everything tight! I took of the cover over clutch cable as it made this kind of rattle...
Actually ping CAN be at that rpm if its at peak torque as its when it happens then falls away as v/e falls off even with s/c engines.. More so with turbo though....

The stuff inside it was breaking up and rattling it's guts out. If you gave it some whacks with your hand, you could hear it. MMMM.. then you have the option of finishing it off. |

It could be the exhaust heat sheilding. mine was rattling so bad that i dropped my exhaust off half way along the car but that didn't help. When I got my new exhaust fitted the muffler man told me it was the heat sheilding around the petrol tank and he just tightened it up. Now no more rattle, just a loud drone. |

new flywheel hey... was it a genuine flywheel?? sounds like a balance problem. i have seen this when people use earlier flywheels onto the late 5ltrs they are balanced different and will cause a slight vibration at the revs you talk about. and dont do it when free reving. thats my bet.

Hmm, yeah the late windsors have different balancing requirements, yes? i.e. dont make them like they used to?

Although that does sound like it could be a problem, I already had this problem before the new flywheel. I assume the flywheel undergoes a dynamic balance (similar to a new tyre on a wheel).
