Anyone running a reduction starter on 5.0 efi. the standard one on my ef xr8 is finding it a bit hard to turn over with the compression since engine has been built. so bought a reduction starter motor to fit windsor v8 off ebay. completely different. im guessing its to suit older windsors.. but even when i look for 5.0 efi mustang style reduction starters from us they are the same as the new one i got and its completely different. gear opening facing opposite way, solonoid on opposite side, 2 bolt holes instead of 3 threaded bolt holes..

I have a road-runner reduction starter for a 5.0.

The starter is different because the bellhousing is Australian designed for a left hand location to clear the steering rack. The US 5.0 EFI has the starter on the right hand side and uses the same old starter motor they have since the 60's.

You can get the starter they used in the E series Falcons from USA because it's a Motorcraft unit, but I don't know what application it's designed for. But if you re-build your old one it should be fine. When they start to die they loose cranking power as the brushes no longer make a good contact on the comutator. A new set of bruches, clean between the comutator segments with a screw driver blade, and some grease on the bushes and you should be OK for another 200k's.

where did you get your reduction starter from? id rather just buy one new then having to rebuild mine.
If i was to rebuild, is it possible to just put the solonoid of the new starter onto my old one, and use the different gearing in it on my old one?
cheers

The standard Ford Motorcraft are already gear reduced.

I'm in NZ, it came from a company in Tauranga or Mt Maunganui. email tim@prostart.co.nz Parent company web address is roadrunner-starters.com
There may be an outlet for them in Australia.

But think seriously about re-building your original unit. Cost for brushes is around NZ$30 from any auto-sparkie. The re-build process takes less than an hour. And my original re-built starter in an LPG 5.0 (takes more cranking to start than petrol) with 10:1 compression works perfectly well.
