Hey guys,

My mate has helped me getting the sump off, an (EL XR8). He's swearing and cursing, because he has all the bolts off, but there is no real way of removing the sump, that we can blatantly see.
We have taken the starter motor off and bottom radiator hose, we've been gentle so far, but its starting to annoy the hell out of us atm.

If anyone's had any experience taking a sump out. Please let me know ASAP!

Also, do we need a special tool to take the fuel pump out. In one of the service manuals i got my hands on, it shows how to make one up. Is there anything i need to take it out?

While i'm here talking, how stupid and hard is to get that damn tool, that you need to pull the power steering pulley off! It s**t me that i can't find anyone, even at Ford who can get me one, and Burson's want $180 for one!!!!!

Cheers Dave

Thre is no trick to the sump from what I remember, just make sure all the bolts are out, including the 2 larger ones at the front which go into the timing cover, once they are all out it should come off with just a bit of force.

Af for the fuel pump, I have never bothered with the special tool. I have done a number of them and just used a large flat screwdriver and mallet. Locate the screwdrier on one of the ribs on the lid and hit it with the mallet. It takes a bit of force but it does slowly undo, just keep changing ribs as it turns and hold it low down on the rib so you don't end up breaking one off. As I said I have done 6 or so using this method and have never had any issues.

Thanks Grant,

We weren't too sure, about being a bit rough with it. But we'll give it a good old go in the morning. I'll get him under the car and i'll hack into the fuel pump. What a great mate, while i'm unbolting all the intake and battery, he's under the car, unbolting my sump!!!

Well we've tried to work the sump out, but to no evail. We bought one of the workshop manuals and its said we will need to unbolt the front engine mounts and jack up the motor from under the sump.
I don't know whether its totally necessary or not, but if someone has attempted this before, and they know whether i have to do this or not, that would be great.

So the sump is loose, you just dont have the clearance to get it out is that right?

Yeah pretty much.
I'm kind of residing to the fact that i'm going to be unbolting the engine mounts and jacking it up. Which will be a pain in the a**, but oh well.
By the way, what do you think of the T3550's?

I was thinking of ditching the T5 and getting one, in the hope that i won't have to worry about driving it hard.
Also, are they any different to bolt up, or does some modification have to be done to make them fit, with the correct bellhousing of course.

You will find the oil pickup in particular sit out out a fair distance, close to the lowest point in the stump (as seen in the pic) so yeah I think you will have to jack the engine up to actually get it out.

The 3550 would be a good idea on the blown engine, far stronger than the T5. Not too sure about fitting it, might want to call mal wood about that but I am pretty sure the shifter sits further back so you need to cut the shifter hole and console etc.

Yeah i was hoping the 3550 wouldn't be too much of a drama, but nothing seem to go smoothly with cars...
Oh well more work for me and a few mates!!!

Haha, yeah its one of those things, you are gaining the experience from tearing it down a few times, but its always a problem or a modification thats making you do it in the first place.

Thats all good, i wish i had a bit more mechanical knowledge myself, it would make life on my mates a bit easier!!! It would also make me happier, knowing i'd done most of the work myself...

Yeah everything i've read dave suggests the engine needs to be lifted from the bay slightly to get the sump off... other option i believe is to remove a bunch of steering components??

Considered doing a timing chain whilst all that is off??

I actually hadn't thought of doing the timing chain while it was all off.
It might be a worthwhile thing to replace.
Anyone have any idea what price i would be looking at roughly for a decent timing chain?

I have a rollmaster 9 keyway set on mine, cost around $120 from memory.
