Well the run of bad luck continues.... sprung a leak in the water pump on Sunday - coolant is leaking into the casting holes on the front of the damn thing.
I assume that only option is genuine part from ford spares but im open to suggestions... In addition to this, between me and my breaker bar 2 bolts have sheared off... so after drilling the fu--ers out i'll need replacements... they all looked pretty s**t - rusted up and in poor shape. Any chance ford will be able to supply a set of replacement bolts? I'll find out myself this week but am working on site so dont know when i'll have a chance to do the ringaround... so any comments/suggestions much appreciated.

I got a non-genuine one from a parts place for about a quarter the price of the ford supplied unit. Looks exactly the same.

Yeah Sprint auto parts do an aftermakret one at about 1/3 the price of the ford one and it has more warranty. I have been running one for a few years now and have no cooling problems. I replaced all the bolts with high tensile ones from Universal Fastners down on Grand Junction Road. It is common for them to go, something to do with bolting alloy parts to cast iron causing the bolts to rust out (same happens on the lower manifold to head bolts). Be careful when drilling the broken bolts out because if you are not aware they are in the alloy timing cover and if you damage that its an $800 part!!!

Great, thanks for the advice guys. I assume sprints can supply a gasket to suit....
Anywhere I can get the specs of the bolts that need replacing? I have most of the originals here but two of them remain embedded in the timing cover... lol Cheers guys - you just saved me a few bucks, much appreciated. Oh, one more thing.... anyone know the diameter of the hoses that come from the driver side of the pump (i.e. heater bypass....) Looks like 5/8th of an inch or so?

Doh...
Ford were able to supply the bolts... but they are now obsolete (this would have been ideal as i am transportless with the car off the road...). Sprints sell the water pumps for $135... bargain!!!! Lol - now just gotta figure out a way to get down there... Must... fix.... car.... before..... dyno... day....

Lol, put your hand up if you HATE BROKEN BOLTS
Have now decided to remove timing cover to get at the rogue bolt... *sigh* changing water pump supposed to be a striaghtforward job, lol. Getting there slowly and enjoying the "real" mech work... instead of bolting on power adders, lol.

Getting the cover iff is a bit of a bastard because you have to drop the sump down a bit (there are 2 bolts that go through the sump and into the bottom of the cover), and remove the harmonic balancer. When you put the sump back on, make sure you use plenty of silicon sealer to stop it leaking. |

Luckily one of my best mates is a mechanic so ive got plenty of good advice (and access to some funky tools - the stud pullers got one of the broken bolts out easy). Thankfully our engines arent like the earlier bronco setups and dont have alternator/aircon/power steer brackets mounted via the timing cover bolts, lol. Got new water pump from sprints, heaps pleased with it and a great price.

IF you dont want to have this happen again spend the extra bucks and buy a set of STAINLESS BOLTS and use neverseize when you put them in. I have them on ALL the water fittings of my GTHO and even after 30 years they are still easy to get out and don't rust up

I have been drumming Antiseize into everyone I see working on their cars. I play with BIG bolts for a living and anything antiseized comes off nice - anything not done is a true b**ch.
Same rule applies to cars Shane

g'day cobbers
do any of you know the ditstance from the mounting face of the water pump to the mounting surface for the pully. I brought an aftermarket pump from the states before knowing the oz pump is shorter. I am trying to sorce some factory pully's (pm sent MRLANDAU) but if I can get that measurement I can make the backspaced pully before surgery begins. on antiseize is nickle or copper beter for this application.

Hi there dalesf150
Are you referring to a water pump for the aussie 5.0L EFI? Yeah i think the main difference is the boss that the pulley mounts onto. I'm yet to put my new one, can measure it up if you like. Mounting face to the front surface of the boss?

Any luck over the weekend with the snapped bolts in the timing cover Martin?

Thanks 4.9 EF Futura
if I can get that measurement it'll be mush appriciated. I think the unit I brought has the mouning boss almost 2 inches further out . my pump measures almost 15cm from back of mount to pully mount surface. good luck with your install I'm collecting parts and will try to make the backspaced pully before pulling the car apart.
