Yes all 5.0's from EB up have hydraulic roller lifters with correspondingly taller lifter bores.

hmmm was talking to someone a while back who siad try & get an old mexican block for my rebuild ....going by your quote, it would mean older block's wouldn't work with roller cam's & lifter's? or the block would have to be modified? i've no idea. |

You can but you'll need to either use a reduced base circle cam(often called retro-roller cams) to allow use of the stock roller lifters or, use link-bar type roller lifters such as the type made by Crane..these will allow stock base circle cams to be used.

Ive seen a number of second generaton windsors(5.0L) converted to flat tappet for budget purposes. considering that a performance roller is upwards of $650(cam alone) it makes sense to consider a flat tappet cam and lifters, pushrods, gaskets and chain set for good performance gains at the same cost. Of course the rollers are better but if its just gunna do burnouts.....

I can get comp roller cams for $350 and you don't have to buy new lifters like you do with a flat tappet or pushrods for that matter. So a flat tappet conversion is false economy.

Thanks. Musta bin a few yrs ago when they were exorbitant.I retro fitted an NC 5.0L into a 22 foot Pride Carribean cabin cruiser that had a worn out Windsor. The camshaft grind was unique to the Mercruiser 888 Z drive leg and couldnt be replicated with a roller cam. A flat tappet cam conversion was the go and was surprisingly cheap. Just thought it would be the go with slugger Falcons too.
