Hi blokes, new here, dont know if I'm in the right spot but WTF...
I have taken the C4 out of my XY 351 Clevo, and replaced it with a 4 speed Borgie...and the box has turned out to be a POS The reverse lockout hardley exists,is there any cure to this, must be worn out,can you weld some meat on the gear stick or what ever??? Or do I look for a jap 5 speed box, chances of getting a good SH top loader would be slim too I would think vik...

I don't think they had a reverse lockout mate, that has mainly been on 5 spd as reverse is inline with 5th.
If you hit reverse with one of those you got probs lol. They are a very weak box anyway, not a good thing behind a 351. If you do find a toploader you can use the single rail bell housing, 1 bolt hole lines up perfect, all you have to do is drill and tap the other 3. |

UYou can get all new shifter mechanisms, or replace all the bushes and see how it goes. Your other option is something like a hurst sequential shifter?

Single Rail's aren't weak at all, plenty have survived for 300,000+ km behind worked 351's with no problems. T5's are a LOT weaker.
They kind of have a reverse lockout, it's done with the spring that wraps around the gearstick. They don't do much, but like others have said, you'll never hit reverse in a Single Rail. The biggest problem with these boxes are the nylon bush that holds the gearstick in often pulls out. The way I fixed it is to get a flat plate with a large hole cut in it to fit over the nylon bush, then run a big U-bolt under the shifter extension housing to hold it all down. No more ripping the stick out on the 1-2 shift again! |

No more ripping the stick out on the 1-2 shift again! I'd go T5 before a single rail, my mate turned so many single rails to spaghetti behind a 265 Hemi it wasn't funny... best part about single rails is the price, you blow it and you can grab another for next to nothing. To be honest, i wouldn't have either box behind a worked 351C, but it all depends on how hard you're going to drive it. From memory you have to push the shifter down to get reverse, so unless you're putting pressure down on the shifter you wont get reverse. The thread often lets go in the shifter, that's why they come out, an easy fix is to bend 2 or 3 of the tags over and put a couple of tek screws through them into the housing, fixed heaps of them that way. You'll find a variable ratio 28 spline toploader fairly easy, there are plenty around and aren't that expensive. The 31 spline close ratio box is where the money sits. |

Thanks for the knowledge blokes,Always had slushers
I think I have to get used to the box, select first very carefully The resistance from the reverse lockout set up is that worn, you can hardly feel it Aaron,do you reckon a stiffer spring would help???pushing the g stick more Andrew,is the Hurst like the old Impalas???Bit like my BA XR6T in performance mode http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/vik351/index.jpg vik...the Classic and Plastic

The only single rail that has any semblance of torque capacity was the one that came behind a 351. It was rated at 325lb/ft and only because of the tall first gear; 2.46 from memory.
The 250 or 302 version had 285lb/ft capacity, they had a 3.06 1st gear. The 265 Hemi gearbox was weakest available at only 245lb/ft because it had something like a 3.4 1st gear. So I'm not surprised about your mate there walker. My 3.06 1st gear single rail lasted a little while behind my 351 until I got a nine inch to replace the blown borgy LSD. Then it stripped all the teeth off 3rd gear. BTW a Z-type T5, which is the strongest T5, still only has a 325lb/ft torque capacity. Pete. |

They are as tuff as !!! I wouldn't say they are over rated..There gear change can be little suspect ?? But thats mainly due to sloppy linkages...They where made by the same people tha made 9" diff's Ford !!!
More info specs etc... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toploader_Transmission

A mate of mine has snapped 3 toploader input shafts. He was a die hard manual user prior. He now has a C6.

Definately not unbreakable, but still a pretty tuff box.
I ran a Hurst Indy shifter on mine, nice tight H pattern shifter compared to original items. I tried an XT GT then an XB which was almost new, still as loose as a goose. |
