Hey guys,
just wondering what options there are for servicing the lifters in the EFI 302. some of mine are a bit noisy and I've got a spare set from another engine that look to be in good condition. Cheers!

Are you sure its the lifters and not the valve guides? Late model windsors are renowned for ticking guides...
I'm not aware of any 'service' kit being available for OEM hyd roller lifters, most manufacturers consider them to be a non servicable part.

Valve guides hey? Any way to tell the difference? he engine is only 'young' at 160K.
I understand the lifters aren't servicable as such, but can they be pulled down somewhat for cleaning purposes? Soaking in petrol, or whatever may be good for them

Yes you can pull them apart and clean them, it won't hurt as long as you refit all the same parts back into the same lifter, you don't bother with stock non roller hydraulic lifters as they are cheap as, but it is worth trying with hydraulic lifters due to how much they cost.
You know there is a leak down tester for lifters, but I haven't seen one used since my first year at TAFE, I think my last job had one in the back shed, it has many old testing tools most have forgotten about.

Fair enough!
Hmm, I'm worried about the guide noise now. Some observations I've made: Only noticable at idle Not present when cold

bring the revs up to about 1800-2000 and see if it is more noticable...
My TE50 does it, its got 118K on it, mostly hard thrashing I'd say from its time as the development mule for FTe.

So it should get louder at 2K rpm ? Cold/Hot ?

I pulled down my lifters and cleaned them with carb cleaner (i think?), when I changed the cam in my AU. They had also done ~160,000kms at that point.
I noticed some where a little "gummed up", but not sure how much difference it would have made at the end of the day. If nothing else, I no longer got the ticking noise for the first 5-10 seconds, on cold startup, as the oil got around 5000km's old. |

Ive had & have noisy lifters at no load, since cam change and head work (new valve guides installed) it still ticks at idle. Ive changed the lifters to new same original AUIII ones but still ticks.
Has any one used an after market roller lifter (stupid question i guess) with good results. if so what brand etc. sorry if im steeling you thread waggin

Yeah ive tried different oil grades , also have 50 thou oversize crow pushrods and 10 thou shims under roller rockers to get geometry and preload good-45 thou ( measured with dial indicator) and no luck.
thinking of comp cams roller lifters.

Whats your lifter preload? ive tryed both ends of preload tolerances ,as per yella terra RR recommendations to no avail.......have read on some US sites that the stock lifters arent too flash .....and a lot of guys are using comp aftermarket ones but i think theyre big bucks |
