You know that the air con compressor will not engage thus saving you the need for a new belt?

If your a/c front bearing is noisy, you can replace it yourself for a similar cost to a replecement belt.

Gates make a balt to suit, just measure the length you need, althouh I am aware this is ½ your question, but you can get em. Looking at about $75ish for a belt though.

i had the air con checked and they said that they could change the noisy bearing but wouldn't last long due to the age of the car, they said smaller belt to bypass it but i didn't want to pay$130 for them to mess around trying different belts. The aircon doesnt get used due to migranes so i figure a smaller belt would be the way to go

run a string around the pulleys, measure it in mm, go to bearing joint (CBC), tell them the length.
part number on belt will be 6pk**** where the stars are the belt length in mm. doesn't have to be exact, tensioner will take up a bit of slack either way.

If your trying to skip the a/c, you can get a shorter belt but it hits the ac pulley, so you'll have to remove the compressor to run a shorter belt.

Ford had these sized belts as they where used on F150's with no air..
But as said measure... The other way around is fitting an adjustable plate on the idle pulley on the other side.. This is what I did for some time..

You put a new bearing in it, and if the bearing is good, it will last for a long time. It sounds to me like that place didn't want to do the work "because it's an older car". I hate workshops like that, they seem to think everyone with older car's doesn't want to spend anything on them! Cheers ToranaGuy

well yea it does sound like they didn't want to do the bearing.
I tried a auto electrical company that do all repairs to air cons and they quoted me $380 just for the replaced bearing so i rang around and they just told me to get a shorter belt, i would do the bearing myself but i have had no time and got no other means of transport so the shorter belt seems like a quick fix |

Cheers ToranaGuy

If it's just the bearing being noisey (and the refrigerant seal is OK), it's a 1 hour R&R job that you can do 3/4 of yourself in the driveway. Cost should be around $25 for the bearing and maybe $10 to press it (maybe free if you talk nicely to the bearing shop that you buy it from). They are just a standard NTN sealed ball bearing assembly.
Read a workshop manual first because the clutch clearance is important, but a bearing replacement should not effect it. Clearance is set with shims so it's super-easy to change if it needs to be.
