How the hell do you remove the speed limiter on an EF II 5.0 Ghia. I have been hitting the limiter lately which is set at 180 odd. Would fitting an EF XR8 ECU solve this proble, or can it be beaten by other methods. Not keen to replace the ECU as it would mean putting it back on the Dyno for the Unichip

If it is an ex police ecu then it will have the speed limiter removed.
Other than that you will need to XR9ute (Pete) to gain access to your ecu and turn off the speed limiter.Or by my EL XR8 ex police ecu.

what do you want for the ECU.

Just be aware that the speed limiter is there for a number of huge safety reasons. Auto transmissions will cook themselves extremely quickly above 180kph and the long falcon tailshafts are also not rated for higher than 180kph either. But if you still want to remove it, your unichip tuners should be able to do it (lots of unichip tuners don't know how to though). It is done through the speed cliping function where once the spedo reading reaches almost 180kph, the signal is stopped therefore tricking the EEC into thinking that the car is still only doing 180kph.

Thanks for that, wasnt aware that was the cse, have asked my unichip tuner about it a couple of times and he said it couldnt be done. But i can so i need another unichip tuner

Definatly can be done with unichip
its the "speedo clipping" feature of the unichip... Basically they just enter a figure at which point the unichip stops sending the speed through to the ECU. (for eg, they can set it so that as soon as you go over 170, the unichip doesnt pass the speed through, so the EEC thinks your still doing 170) Takes about 5 mins to do, no dyno required.

I also have heard that the strength of the tailshafts is a big reason why the speed limiter is set at 180.
Incidentally, is the Northern Territory the only place to have open speed limits on some of their highways or are there other states with similar limits?

Nope, but he might be playing on a race track. If you are going to go over 180kmh at least upgrade to the alloy XR tailshaft fitted to unlimited vehicles, i.e. all unlimited cop cars and fit a tailshaft loop, not a bad idea even if you never go over 180kmh, stops a high speed catapult. Or find out about two piece tailshaft like Kelli fitted to her XR8.

I have an ELGT ECU in my car at the moment and even though I've tried, I haven't reached over 180km/h due to the fact that I get very bad driveline vibrations at 170km/h.. The auto isn't meant to be too good at 180 either so it's there for a reason. Unless of course you get a two piece tailshaft and new gearbox...
I do have a Long wheel base though...

I did have that problem when i first got it, but fresh tyres, Discs and a good wheel balance fixed that problem. Lest just say that current testing with the 53jet in the NOS has pushed the limits of the speed limiter on more than 1 occasion. We will see how it goes when i get to WSID again in april

I do have a Long wheel base though... Maybe the tailshaft and diff flanges arn't timed properly. There are yellow paint marks on both flanges that need to be lined up. They are timed to cancel out each others runnout. That could be the cause of your vibration. Then: Find a longer stretch of road and try a bit harder
