I've owned a 5 litre VS Caprice
Currently own a 5 litre fairmont my dad owns a 5 litre LTD and from all my experiences the fairlanes are a better car (comfort, ride creature comforts), the stato will be a bit quicker then the fairlane off the line thanks to its short gearing, but up high you will find they will be much the same, remember they are both barges and by no means quick, in my experince i6 falcon or v6 commodore has usually been quicker then both of them. When i was in school my caprice (stock except for paccies, exhaust, and pod filter) got beaten by a hyundai excel 5 speed to about 80 km/h, no joke, next car was an i6 fairmont and i was much happier performance wise. LWB cars arn't about performance, so if thats what u have in mind i'd be looking at a Calais or a Fairmont, that way you can still keep your luxuries and with the less weight will go much better, Im very happy with my 5 litre fairmont, i have put a 5 speed and a little bit of money into engine and drivetrain and its a rocket. Mods wise parts are genreally cheaper for the the holdens, I have a 308 motor im building up for my 67 HR and you dont have to spend as much money to get the same power as the Winsdor, Overall i still think the winsdor is a better motor, genreally the holdens sound better but if you set your winsdor up right with extractors, cats and twin system the winsdor always sounds better IMO, winsdor also seems to be a little better on fuel, but that depends on the driver most of the time. Hope i have helped, im only 20 but have owned 6 cars and grown up with them my whole life so dont just right me off haha

"LWB cars arn't about performance" thats why it soo good when they are done up! cause no one expects anything from them - i had many suprised looks from other drivers when my 351 ZD wolud out handle them - never under estimate a luxo barge! they might just give it to you when you least expect it!

I've owned my NC II FAIRLANE for a little over 2 years now. Have replaced the old 4.0L 6 cyl with a Fully Reconditioned EL TICKFORD motor (4.2L - bored 30 thou, extractors & a Pod Filter system). Spend a couple of $$$ here & there towards the drivetrain, interior & exterior. All in all, i have beaten a Nissan SSS N14 - 5 speed, which are pretty gutsy little cars! And a 2009 Toyota Corolla 1.8L - 6 speed.
These old girls are real 'head-turners' when dressed up nice & clean!!!! Nothing can compare in comfort & space inside the vehicle! I'm not in it for the performance side anyways. When i take the Lane out for functions or cruising, riding in both style & comfort is all anyone really needs! But finally, when i have enough $$$, i shall add to my collection and purchase a V8 NC II FAIRLANE and work it !!! |

Forgot to add....that Stateman's are HORRIBLE to see out of when you're reversing!! Why do Holden like to design cars where they're so f**ken high in the a**!!!???

just look at any early holden, vn up to vt i guess, and same model falcons or fairlanes, the falcons seem to come out on top for luxury, holdens seem to have a volkswagen theme to them, working mans car,

Some of the posts here made me lol.
AFAIK, the Stato/Caprice was generally better equipped than the Lane/LTD. IRS is average, v6 is crap, 304 is good. The old GM auto is rough, but long lived. I quite like the VR/VS LWB myself. I definitely prefer the Ford though. |

I seem to have a perception that Holdens are a bit more revvy.
Probablly better for burn-outs etc. My 5.0 NCII has 275K on the clock and is stock as a rock. Everyone loves it when they hop in. It still seems quite luxurious (it's a Ghia). I did a rough 0-100k dash today and was around 8 - 8.5 seconds. Not bad for an 18 year old bardge. As for fuel consumption..... Pretty bad. I'm sure if you drive like granny, it'd be O.K. but...... I just can't help planting it. It's my first V8 after all. |
