Hi all.
Looking at buying a 3v fairmont ghia. Looking for a car with impressive low down torque. Decent street performance and all the comforts that suit a daily. I think the 3v ghias meet this. Would love a BF 2 with the 230kw and the 6speed. - any thoughts on the engines and cars? common problems etc? - how does the 220kw/4spd compare to the 230kw/6spd? - do they respond well to mods? - hwo do they sound with an exhaust? as good as the boss motors? have never heard a 3v with an exhaust? - are the engines as reliable as all the other b series ones? any comments would be great. |

Hey Dude,
Yeah the early BA's you would wanna stay away from them, they have timing chain tensionor issues and VCT phasor issues. I know cuz i got one. Id recommend the BF Mk2 with the 6 speed, youd be suprised how much better the extra two gears makes them go. Also the climate control on the early BA's has issues and requires the dash to be removed to replace a silly $50 part that ford didnt design properly. They respond pretty dam well to mods, exhaust doesnt sound too good until you get extractors though. Id go intake, catback, extractors, under drives and tune. in that order. Also put a bigger pipe between the airbox and throttlebody. You would be looking at atleast 210RWKW. Nice car to drive and goes hard but those VCT Phasor and Timing chain issues cost the better part of 3 grand to fix, so i would stay well clear of the BA's and if you are looking at one, find out if the tensioners and VCT was replaced under warranty. Go for the BF Mk11 and you'll be laughing mate.

Yeah they fixed all those issues in 2005. The boss motors don't have VCT but they do suffer timing chain issues, but they were also fixed in 2005.
About the sound, well its all in your opinion really. The boss motors sound really smooth but the 3v motors sound a bit more lumpy IMHO. I have seen a few bosses that sound really good but not many, and most of them are GT's. Bout 15.5L/100km according to the trip, but i dont exactly drive like a grandma. and i drive through peakhour to and from work.

Thanks guys.
Interesting that you think the 3v sounds better, not the first person I have heard say that. any good vid links? Is it easy to get extractors for them? would love to run a twin exhaust system like this one, have a listen to the sound. is it similar to yours? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-17DC53X ... re=related would be looking at the BF mk 2 ghia so all the engine problems should be soughted I guess? What sort of 0-100 and 1/4 mile performance can you expect with all those mods? thanks again guys |

spark plugs are a nightmare on the 3v models... if they aren't removed like every 50,000K then they generally don't come out at the 150,000k intervals for a change... This I know because the old man has one at work and I had to find a way to get the broken part out of the head without removing it...
ford-v8-f2/3v-v8-spark-plug-removal-t86060.html and basically they recommend this tool when they break off: http://www.lislecorp.com/divisions/prod ... roduct=484 Which is $108 bucks off ebay... This is the one issue I'm aware of just to help you with food for thought... Cheers, Tim

Extractors are easy to find, got mine supplied and fitted for $1100. He's not wrong about the plugs breaking either, but i had mine changed at around 120,000k's and none of them got stuck. I got the plugs done at ford. They have a tool to get it out if it does snap and get stuck in the head and i think they quoted me an extra $150 if one got stuck.
Some dude on fordforums.com.au "Mr. CVE" had bout 235 rwkw and ran a 13.5. He said it had the stock diff ratio too.

thanks for the replies. I have read the article on cve and ace's 3vs in the ford mag and they were both getting 235s with unopened motors. not bad!
fairmont 03 5.4 - did you see my link to youtube a few replies ago, is this a similar sound to yours? very throaty for a modern v8! Will GT stainless systems fit straight up to the cats on these cars? you could just cut the tips off and put some dumpers in if so? |

Hey Dude, Yeah i did check that one out, mine does sound pretty similar to that but mine is a single system so it sounds a bit more old school like an older V8. I've been meaning to upload a video onto youtube but i havent had the chance yet. Hopefully i'll get the chance tonight, just busy with the stereo atm. I think there is a sticky in the Exhaust forums about the interchangeability of exhausts between different BA models. But i got mine fitted for $560, its a single 3".

{USERNAME} wrote: awesome, would be great to hear a vid of it. do you know is the tensioners and phasors issue was soughted by ba mk11? Yeah will get around to it one of these days haha. As far as i know they didnt fix the issue until the BF mk1, the BA MkII still had that issue. BUT, having said that Ford did have a recall for them, but the recall was based soley on customer complaints, so that means they would only fix the issue if the customer complained about the noise. So if you are looking at a BA MkII or BA MkI then check the service history with your local ford dealer and they will be able to tell you if it has been done under warranty or not. If it hasnt had it done, add about 3 grand to the price cuz thats what it will cost to get ford to fix it. And also, if you looking at a BA, make sure the Climate Control Mixer Shaft has been replaced under warranty, and check that it works on both sides. They are prone to snapping a $50 part behind the dash that controls the hot/cold that comes out of the vents. But you have to remove the Centre Console, Steering Column, both front seats and the entire dash to replace that one part. Labour is $900. I think thats why the BF's are way more expensive than the BA's with similar k's, just a more reliable car and the BF's have a 5 speed auto box i think. Cheers,

yeah would really like the 6 speed if i can get one.
Another question. I know the phaser and timing chain issues were all fixed in the BFs. Was the oil sconsumption issues that the BA v8s had fixed in bfs? did this even affect the 3vs? thanks |
