Where do you measure the throttle body size from? Is it the throttle plate or the inner size of the opening?

Cause I got a EL XR8 series 2 and on the FPV site the differences were EL GT headers, Explorer manifold, larger throttle body and tweaks to the ECU.

I got the ELGT headers and Explorer manifold.
I think the standard TB size is 58mm so where do I measure to check the size?

Cheers

The throttle bodies that came out for the EL GT's and AU XR8's was 65mm. I bought one and measured the outside port as 67 or 69mm ( or thereabouts ) and the inner port as about 64.7mm.

OK cool. Then thats what I got on my EL XR8 then.
Inside the body it has a tiny little step about 1mm. So because its round take off about 2 or so mm and then the throttle plate is about 62mm diameter.

Thanks Vic.

Is there such a thing as a 65mm throttle body? I thought there were only 55mm and 65mm on the Windsors.

65mm was fitted to AU V8's.

It was also fitted to Ford SUV's in the U.S. which is where Ford Australia sourced them from.

Sorry, was a typo. I meant is there any such thing as a 63mm throttle body. I have seen a few people refer to 63mm throttle bodies (as opposed to 65mm). I thought Ford only fitted 65 (AUs) and 55 (E-series) ones.

Probably is a 65mm but people are being picky with the measurements. I got a ruler out and measured mine and it was about 63mm on the inner diametre after the bellmouth lip. I guess it depends on where you take your measurement.

I would of thought that the throttle plate is the bit you measure as it would be the narrowest/closest point before going into the manifold.

Exactly, the measurement is taken from the narrowest point which is where the blade sits, and should be 59mm, so close enough to 60mm.

A significant EL XR8 upgrade followed in October 1997 with little fanfare. An extractor exhaust system similar to the EL GT's, a larger throttle body, revised Explorer inlet manifolds and tweaking of the latest EEC V system lifted power output up to 185 kW with a small torque increase. The 16 inch wheel and tyre option became standard with two alloy wheel styles available.

According to FPV it should have a larger throttle body than standard and 58mm was standard.

They are wrong, they also say they have roller rockers which they don't. A number of people have checked their EL2 TB's and they are the standard 60mm ones.
