well i picked up my timing cover gasket and seal kit today and there is 6 gaskets, 2 small and 4 big ones and the seal. 1 of the big ones is the same as the one that came with the waterpump and one looks like it must be the one that goes between the cover and block but not sure as i dont have the cover yet. was wondering where the other 4 gaskets go but then i noticed it says ford 5ltr efi 1992 on the packet and now im confused
is there a difrence with the timing covers and gaskets between 1992 and 1998 5ltrs??

Might be thermostat gasket in amoungst that lot?? Maybe got a gasket kit with ones for the throttle body/egr spacer as well???
If you can get a pic up, should be able to tell ya. The engine in your EL XR8 is (as far as timing cover, water pump etc goes) is the same as that fitted to an EB V8.

Yeah mate, if that's all you're changing then you'll only need the two gaskets - water pump and timing cover. Oh, by the way... there is the rubber sump gasket that goes all the way around the sump (obviously lol). A part of this gasket will be exposed when you remove the timing cover, as it creates a seal between the sump and the bottom of the timing cover. Excercise a bit of caution when removing the timing cover and the sump gasket will remain in tact. Excercise similar caution when refitting the timing cover - and the sump gasket will be fine. That's why its recommended to take a few bolts out of the sump, to drop the front of it down a few mm and make it much easier to fit the timing cover and be able to reuse the sump gasket.

did mine less than a month ago.
i had a pack that was labeled 'ford v8'.. had timing cover, waterpump, crank seal inside.. had more than i need coz some were cleveland(70s and 80s v8s) gaskets. chances are you've got all three(water pump, timing cover, thermostat housing) for both motors.. once u put pic up we'l be able to tell ya pretty quick.

do what 4.9 EF said, and loosen some sump bolts off,
IMPORTANT NOTE: theres a couple of short dowels that go into the block and timing cover(down in the lower part of the timing cover, one left, one right) so it has to slide forward maybe as much as 15mm before it will come free. once u get the bolts off and try pull it out, it will seem stuck but its not. u'l see what i mean.

Yep that's the timing cover gasket alright.
Looks like you've also got two different water pump gaskets there (would prob be to account for the different timing covers you can get for these motors... i.e. same timing cover gasket but different water pump mounts and hence gasket). Lol, NFI what the little ones are for?? Prob some sort of thermostat?? Oh, dont forget to dress these gaskets... i forget the loctite formula number... it's brown and smells disgusting lol.

Another tip... gasket dressing hates coolant. So when the job is done and everything is back together, fill the system with plain jane tap water. Run the engine and let it get up to temp for a while... a short drive might be in order. This will help the gasket dressing cure. Then, once cooled down, dump the water and put your choice of coolant in.
