Hey all,
just wondering where to go with a few problems... today i blew a hole the size of a 5cent coin in my timing cove just behind the water pump. i havnt had the car that long so i dont know how it was looked after before.
i have a new timing cover but should i replace the water pump as well and what are the water wells going to look like?? the motor is strong so i dont want to rip it down just to see how much corosion is there if i can avoid it. i have been told today that if the timing cover blew out then the rest cant be to far behind.

These timing covers are notorious for this problem. They rust really easily and I doubt you will have to replace the water pump. The top is the worst part of these things which is really thin. There are replacements that are made from alloy which would be a better replacement than the standard ones.

if it let go right behind the waterpump thats where they wear thin so it might not be to bad. you will see how bad the coolant passages are when you get the timing case off. how old is the waterpump? if more than a few years old id replace it as they dont cost that much and will save you having to do it later down the track same with the front main seal. be very carefull with the long bolts that go through the timing case next to the coolant passages as they might be rusted and if they break you are in BIG trouble, dont bother going to ford for replacments or make sure ya sitting down when they say the price. dont forget about the sump bolts that go through the sump cover into the timing chain case, i did, what a C*** that was  if the half circle gasket between timing case and sump is stuffed dont stress as you can get a new one in a ACL sump gasket kit for like $50, everyone i spoke to said you cant buy them.
i think that covers most of the things to look out for.
are you going to do the work yourself?

cheers fellas,
that helps heaps.
im doing the work this weekend if i can get the parts i need up north. im a bit worried though as the car goes on a transport today with no water in it. i tried to put a ruogh patch over the hole so it would at least hold water but that only lasted 5mins with the radiator cap off.

what parts havent you got? repco or the likes will be the best bet, dont bother with ford unless you are very very desprate. this is what i got from repco to do the job.
water pump -$120ish with new gasket
timing cover kit (gasket and front main seal) -$50odd
balancer remover tool -$25 or so
acl sump gasket kit (only got it for the half circle gasket) -$50 odd
plus gasket goo and oil and coolant.

if ya get stuck just search "timing cover" in the v8 workshop, there is a few threads with some good info plus mine with all the beginers questions.

If your looking for something to temporarily block the hole put some silver seal in the radiator and it will block the hole within about 30 seconds, works wonders that stuff. You can buy it at bursons for about $2 for a small canister

i tried a proper fibre glass/epoxy patch but i think that the hole was too big. the car is on the transport anyway now with a big note taped to the steering wheel not to run it....... fingers crossed some idiot doesnt leave it running.

Personally id change the water pump whislt its all off. Have seen a few let go around 150k... myself included.

Millard's earlier post is gold.

Try not to bust any bolts as the long ones that go through the pump/cover/block are *stubborn*.

And not sure if its been mentioned but be aware the timing cover will set you back about $800 from ford spare parts.
