Hi Guys,

New guy in town seeking advice.

My situation is... Owned the AU1 V8 Ute ( not XR8 ) for the last tens years with the only minor mods being pacer extractors and CAI.

Though recently a blown head gasket cooked my engine, so I've gone out and brought the trickflow 'track heat' top end kit... with the stage 1 cam. Holley 70mm TB and a 75mm Pro M MAF... which is currenlty being rebuilt on a stock 302 short engine from Eagle. ( will possibly upgrade to a dart 363 within the following months) ... I ve also considering a T5z Ford racing box from summit... with an added chunky bit for the diff... but i still need to further research whether the T5z will blot straight on.

Though my problem now is the ECU or chip... so some advice would be really welcome... so i can get the old girl up and running.

A/ would putting an ECU from an AU11 XR8, solve my performance problems or would there be difficults between the smartsheild and smartlock systems.

B/ DO i use a piggy back chip and are any of these flash tunes any good?

C/ Or - do i just reset my ECU and drive it hard to reprogram it.

cheers

You have an AU, look at SCT flash tuner, and get it custom tuned to suit you specific mods.

It is an AU1 though... Does that make any difference?

AU 1 is still an EEC-V ecu, so no problem with tuning. Talk to some tuners in your area. Sounds like a nice combo, but the TFS Track heat kits will strangle a 363, should you choose to go this way...

I'm quite certain the t5zs from the US will not fit our cars. Also, I doubt you will find anything over there to suit our BW78 Diffs. Definitely get a flash tune done, as you'll be lucky for the car to run without a tune and that Pro-M MAF.

Depends what size ports on heads etc ??
Serious power I'd be checking the R series boxed inlet etc..
Tremec T5z are very weak gear box's !!
Check here on their own site..

Just an update.

Trick flow top end kit "street burner" 170 cylinder heads is going on top of reconditioned 302 eagle short engine.

Dart 363 has a 3/4 month build time so Iam using the 302 to get things up and running. Also realise I have brought the wrong top end kit for the Dart, so now i am considering trying to sell this current engine whole and start again with the Dart, or just down grade to a 347. (still undecided)

Whilst engine is being rebuilt I ve needed to hardwire my fuel harness to suit trickflow 24lb bosh style injectors. Tried getting adaptors for VPW though they sent the wrong ones... I got the in patient and broke out the soldering gun. ( pretty sure it will run OK )

I also need to modify the TBS sent up for VPW to suit my 70mm Holley. VPW sent up a E series TBS, which needed to be hard wired, though in the end it seems easier to just mod original.

Also - I m going to do the brake upgrade from AU1 to BA front end. Brought all the front end gear, changed my steering rake, scored a great set of 17 in alloys today, so a couple more bits and pieces and i will be ready to go with front end. Still need to get a 30 mm Whiteline sway bar... and I would like to go the premium brake upgrade front and back... but money is tight, so maybe I just do a standard upgrade till the wallet is a little fatter.

Other than that - Brought a Pro M 76mm MAF... MDS coil pack... trickford blue instrument cluster. NOw just need to research a better CAI to suit my needs and to be honest I think i will just built my own box based on the K & N Apollo design.

SO now its about putting all the pieces together, get the engine running and than decide engine details and chips.

Gear Box of choice will be the TKO 600 ... which is about a $4k conversion.

Couple of other thing - after reading a lot of reviews, I ve decided to go with a copper radiator. Picked one up here on the coast for $200... with seemed heaps better than the PWR $1100 price tag for alloy.

Also _ currently the ute is dual fuel but i am disconnecting the LPG until I can upgrade the system. Mechanic recommended I looked at Gas Research TB, though I also like the injector systems. Currently it seems that Holden has the bomb with their Petrol start up - LPG mid range - Petrol after 5,500 rpm.

Does any one know of a system like this suited for AU ford???

Just a couple more pics I could not upload before.

U may find that the TKO600 is too short to run in the AU.
I beleive T-56 and T5 are your only options for manual transmission.

Jeff is right, T56 and T5 are the only gearbox options. I also hate to say this but the blue Tickford cluster is S2/3 and won't work in a Series one.

Bummer on the blue cluster, probably paid too much for it though it's something I've always liked.

Just now finished heat wrapping headers. They had alot of surface rust so today I had them sandblasted, primed with heat paint, now wrapped. Out of a 20 mtre roll I ended up with 2.5m spare. Repco and Bursons only had 15mt rolls at $105 trade. Brought mine online off a guy in Seaforth... 20 mt for $70, including stainless steel tires. I brought an extra pack of 10 tires and needed them.

Headers now look good. They are not tune pipes but have a great note with a 3 inch pipe.

Engine back in on Wendsday ... Exciting!!!

Re tko 600 transmission. I think they will fit into the AU with a slight mod to the shifter. Guy at Mal Woods confirmed this.

Anyways that's a long way off... And I'm still undecided about the Dart 363.

Does anyone know what manual box is in the series 1 commercial??? Mechanic seemed to think it was a T5 but ford gave him a different name when he rang for a part. (he forgot the name they gave)

They all got T5's. V8's got Tremec T5's, stronger than a Borg Warner, but not by much. Who at Mal Wood told you that, as I'm fairly sure a TKO will not fit as they are substantially shorter than an AU 5 speed.

Didn't the T3 series have the TKO 5 spd? still not as strong as T56 though.

careful with wrapping headers - they won't last long!
