I put my car on my mates dyno lastnight to find out what kind of rwkw its putting out while standard but he only pushed the car to about 4000rpm.
It gave me a reading of 141rwkw.
He mentioned that he didnt push it all the way because he was worried that it might blow a rod. He said that I need to get the car tuned properly.
I was just wondering if this is a costly thing and where a good place to get it done in Sydney.

Why did he not rev it past 4000rpm? Do you rev it past 4000rpm on the street?

141rwkw @ 4000rpm sounds pretty healthy to me.

yeah ive taken it up to 5500 rpm on the street but when he did the 1st run on the dyno it started to make a wierd ticking noise so he backed off and only pushed it to 4000rpm on the second run.
1st run he took it a touch over 4000 rpm and got a reading of 153rwkw.
My cars due for a service anyways so might as well do a tune as well.
Can tunes be done by Ultra tune and similar workshops? or does it have to be performance shops?

Maybe the sound is detonation?

A few places advertise Flash tuners for AU- BF so i'd say that'd be your best bet. Flash tuners can be had for $795 and a custom tune for around 300 on top.

I was thinking that as well but my car is still pretty much stock so Im not sure if it'll be worth it.
Will it add extra power if I flash tune it now?
and if I do how much would it cost for another tune later on down the track after mods are added?

Do you know what has been done to the car, to make it need a tune?
You can do a fair few things (and if done properly) shouldn't affect the car, and how safely it runs.

maybe you have a bung knock sensor. this will cause it to 'ping'. could be the noise you heard.

if nothing is modified on the car or if you just have basic exhaust and intake mods the car should tune itself if all sensors are working as they should. plugs, leads and filters is about all you can do.

flash tuner will fine tune your mixtures a bit and maybe get you a little bit more power with the adjsutability of it. timing can be advanced a touch more but the downside is you'll need to run premium.

the cars only got a cat back exhaust and i just recently fitted an SS induction unit with k&n filter.
It is due for a service but the bloke that did the dyno said it needs a tune.
He didnt want to rev it too high cos he was worried that he might damage a rod or something.

I somehow don't think he knows what he's on about.
If there's something that doesn't sound right to him, then i would assume that it would be a mechanical problem. It shouldn't need a 'tune' I would ask him what he means by getting a 'tune'. A service on the car is always a good idea, but thats not really a 'tune'.

I kinda thought it was wierd as well cos i know the car needs a service and its not running to its full potential right now but i've pushed it to redline in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear on the road and it seemed fine.

OK most of the time I'm a pain in the backside but this time I may be able to help you.

1. Change your leads and spark plugs
I can't stress how important this is. Get a set of yummy blue NGK leads for it with fiberglass insulators and a set of iridium plugs $400.

2. change the bloody oil to shell helix 15/50. If ya gonna give it hell penrite 15/60 semi synthetic is the stuff.

Pop ur bonnet now in the dark. I bet you have fireworks going off!

Could be just a blown header gasket?..annoying but won't hurt the engine.

So i guess a service is the way to go first up and see how it goes - spark plugs, leads, oil.
What is involved in a tune anyways?

unless you have a flash or a chip there is nothing they can tune. all the sensors take care of timing, spark, fuel etc. cam angle, crank angle, o2 sensors, coolant temp sensor etc. a good auto elec or ford can read your ecu fault codes which may show up one or more of these sensors if they are not working correctly.
