Hi guys

Is there any way to adjust the sensitivity of my power steering? Its super light.

5.0L EL Fairmont

Cheers.

Its speed sensitive in Ghia's. It is designed to be light at parking speeds.
Its is electrically activated by a solenoid on top of the rack near the input shaft so you could bypass that part either by disconnecting it or applying 12V to it (not sure which)

I think that's the idle speed sensor ???
Check if smaller pulley can be fitted to pump ??
Try different power steering fluid ??
Try different steering geometry ??
Changing camber / caster gives different handling
and feeling ...

EL Ghia 6's have two solenoids one for bumping up the idle at full lock and one to change the line pressure in the rack dependant on vehicle speed. Interestingly the 8's don't have the bump up capability.

but they do have the speed sensitive capability...
so do as the others say and unplug it...

Disconnecting the plug returns the rack to std feel all the time.
The solenoid gets 12v IGN and the other line is controlled by the ECU - could try putting a variable resistor in that line.

Thanks for that Ray, I had a feeling it would be that way around. I don't think a resistor will work very well due to the mechanical loading on the solinoid due to pressure, steering force and other variables. I think the better way is to reduce or impede the flow through the valve that the solenoid is controlling.

I don't know about that Tony - the trimming resistor is simply fine tuning the current flow, the ECU still controls. I'd suspect for example, if you stiffened the steering at park speeds, the steering would be stiffer up the speed range, but still lighter at parking relatively.
