hey all you guys out there running underdrive pulleys....do you have any temp probs or not charging at idle etc.... are they a good investment..can you notice the extra few kw's...?

I changed from vbelt to an underdrive gilmerbelt setup, and i have problems with altenator not charging below 2000 Rpm, wich is fine if im driving like i normally do,,but cruise speed, 110 sits at about 1500Rpm, so i drain bateries cruising at night,,, im sure teh serpentine underdrives are fine tho,, couldnt say if they are worth the investment, cant see it being a huge drain on power as long as you have a thermofan..

skecth your v belt system is the same drive as your gilmer belt both are driven the same way,
he is talking about going from the 5.0 windsor drive systems to a underdrive stup which allows more power to "free" from teh engine simalar to removing the mechanical fan on your car. your car did not have a "overdrive setup" hence u cannot change to a underdrive setup also your charging problems sound like u need to chaneg the size of the pulley on the alt and the underdrive pully systems are a good evenstment as they allow the car to rev faster and smoother and make the engien feel more powerfull hehehe i think mr landua sells them. . . .

An underdrive belt setup means exactly that frank,, its a larger pullyon the alternator and water pump, causeing them to rotate slower in relation to the crankshaft , and hance draw less power from the engine,,, if you a have a mechanical fan this will rotate slower and draw less energy from the engine, as will your alternator (hence charging issues) and your waterpump/aircon ect... another way to go , if your just looking for drag times, is get a shorter belt, i can organise one for about $30, and it reduces engine load by over twice the amount of the underdrive setup,,, up to half a second on 1/4 mile times. but cant be used on teh road as it only runs to the water pump so you still have cooling..

my car goes fine with a Underdrive pulley kit on it, at start it had cooling problems, but i got the Termo's hooked up probley and a good termostat, good coolant etc, goes fine and never goes above 1/4 on the temp guage.
Thats the only problems i had with mine but all fixed with not to much money spent to do it. and gain..., yeah i felt a very good gain in power with mine..., got a bit more km's out of a tank too.

mugen, I'm running the underdrive pulleys Shane sells on mine and have had no problems. On a stinking hot day a few weeks ago, it kept its cool in traffic nicely. The charge at idle was dropping a bit, gauge was showing about 10.5 - 11 volts but the a/c fan was on speed 8 out of 10 and the thermo fans were running on high, and I had the stereo going (sub, amp) so I'd expect that. On a cooler day it charges at idle fine. Anyway, the battery has never lost charge.
As for noticing a difference, I definately could feel an improvement, and the G Tech showed it too.

When I had the underdrives on I had no problem with cooling either. The battery charging at idle did suffer though, but unless you are idling for a long time with big stereo etc going I don't think it will be a problem.

The EF/EL series don't suffer as much as the EB/ED series do because of the different, bigger alternator. With Barry_V's "Loveboat" DC LTD and the Ford Racing underdive pullies, we tested the charging with a Fluke multimeter - it made 14.6V at 1600rpm - since the stock stall converter is around that figure anyway - so long as you are driving the car charges.

would it be a worthwhile investment to pop an EF/EL alternator onto an EB/ED V8 ? Do they fit easily?
What rating is the EF/EL V8 Alternator? The one on my EB is 95A, its an aftermarket/reco unit I beleive.

The EF/EL alternators are 110amps so if you plan to run the full electronics and some decent audio gear it would be highly benificial. NZ fitted one on his car - pehaps best to PM him and see what is involved.

I think the only thing that I could notice on mine was that it was a little more responsive on the throttle. As for power, my seatofthepants-o-meter maybe a little rusty as I couldn't tell if it improved or not. No adverse problems with it. Cooling and charging: no problems.

regards from adam no benifit i think the au runs 110 amp! i know a upgrade for the e series alts is to get a AU alt and put the insides in E series body
